So sad to hear of the death of Sean Rocks. Such an important friend and supporter of arts and culture in Ireland, Arena was always an enlightening show under his stead. May he rest in peace.

Ionad an Bhlascaoid has reported the passing of Máiréad Kearney-Shea in Springfield, MA at the age of 103.

Máiréad was the last of the Great Blasket-born community in the USA. A remarkable woman, may she rest in peace (1/2)

In the rush to source stone, heritage sites could be caught in crossfire, often encroached upon in the search for materials. Housing is so important but news like this is like a warning bell for important heritage locations across Ireland. Balance will be essential here.

Six years later, the Great Blasket islanders would leave the island permanently. It has been uninhabited ever since.

Six years ago today, I moved to the Great Blasket Island for six months, an experience that shaped me in ways I'm still discovering.

Endlessly grateful for that chapter. Hopefully this season is the best yet for the island and all who visit get to enjoy it. It's a place that stays with you.
