When the NWS QC issued the severe warnings for Johnson County last evening, were they looking at the same radar that I was? Largely a nothingburger. Don’t cry wolf too many more times this spring or people will stop paying attention to the warnings. @nws.noaa.gov

One of the biggest storms in the last 5 years is now onshore and sampled by ground sites providing some clarity for Friday’s severe weather. SE Iowa will be on the fringe of the severe weather outbreak, but it will be windy nonetheless as a 975mb 😱 low races NE across the upper Midwest. Stay tuned.

Friday March 14 may bring a large, deep, Colorado Low to the central US. A record breaking low-pressure system could bring a variety of severe weather, amplified by a 100mph low level jet. Still a lot of uncertainty this far out but should be on our collective radar.

One thing about IT Administration is recognizing when people are frustrated. It can be maddening to be told a problem is fixed only to have another/similar problem immediately pop up. It is hard to do, but I have to tell myself this as well, remain calm!

Measured in 3 unique spots and ended up with an even 7” of snow in Iowa City

That’s a great forecast/radar verification. About as good as it gets in the chaos of weather forecasting. The Euro for the win.
February 12, 2025 at 7:22 PM
The euro from last evening is verifying nicely. Interesting southern cutoff to the snow just of Iowa City. So far we have a solid 5” with 1+” set to move through.
February 12, 2025 at 7:17 PM
Final Euro for this storm. This is basically a nowcast. This appears right on, and we got that NW shift we were looking for.
February 12, 2025 at 2:09 PM
Every model run has come in with lighter snow for our area. Around 3-4”. I’m going to go with the outlier, the Euro. Here is what it paints for total snowfall. (Model runs tonight should give us some more clarity)

Here is what I mean when we need a little nudge NW to see the heaviest snow in eastern Iowa. The SREF has been consistent at putting the heavy band of snow to the east of our local area. (This is a 12 hr accumulation total, so lower amounts will be see here. The overall storm will be about 18 hrs)
February 11, 2025 at 2:32 PM
Watches have been upgraded to warnings here in eastern Iowa. Here is the latest snowfall forecast with start times at about 7:00 am in the local area. If this storm wraps up a little more, we will see heavier snow further NW and into our area. As it stands now, IC should see 4-6" of snow.
February 11, 2025 at 2:23 PM
The GFS has come in further north with the snow as well. With a winter storm watch now issued, the overnight runs will be big when it comes to snow placement, but everything is on track this evening.
February 11, 2025 at 1:57 AM
The Euro comes in a little further north with the snowfall. Good dynamics with this system will create good lift on the NW side of the storm. I think these amounts are a bit on the high side, but one can dream, right?
February 10, 2025 at 3:34 PM
A snowstorm is now likely for Wednesday. A daytime storm which will drop significant amounts of snow in our are. Will have more details later. But check out the NAM for Wednesday afternoon. Just need a little nudge north.
February 10, 2025 at 1:05 PM
Keeping an eye on Wednesday's storm system heading to our area. Here is a screenshot of the surface precipitation at 7 pm Wednesday evening. Notice a lot of pink noting the dreaded mix. If this thing wraps up we could see a significant storm. Leaning towards just a nuisance at this time.
February 3, 2025 at 2:20 PM
Here's to looking at the total snowfall on the ensembles through Feb 16th. I think the majority of our snow will be after Feb 10th.

Snow game at The Linc. Playoffs in the snow; classic January football. I feel like there will be fewer of these down the road after we dome up everything.
