Swimmer with Two Rocks.

We went up onto the Moor today. A bitterly cold day, the air temperature hovering around 2 degrees with the water at about 4. My partner went for a swim. Everything seemed simply stopped by the cold.

Looking east from Ger Tor on Dartmoor. Winter, late afternoon. A beam of light catches the far hills. A scattering of snow.

Winter, Taw valley, Dartmoor

A combination of multiple exposures, intentional movement and winter colours at dusk in the Taw valley on northern Dartmoor.

Almost a year since we tramped up to the highest point in southern England, through the gloom and cloud, to be greeted with this; a spectacular cloud inversion.

Bea sent me a picture of the post Budget party last night. There’s little Bea, her Minister, the Chancellor and two special advisors. All grinning from ear to ear. Lovely.
But what really struck me was they are all women. Things are better, not perfect, nowadays.

Immersion.

Something a little different.

A series of images looking at our relationship with nature through the prism of a wild swimmer. A combination of portrait and ICM images attempt to convey the submission of the swimmer to the river and the ritualisation of that process.

Cape Wrath.

Just after dawn in late November. A beautiful nothingness.

The Van, Cape Wrath.

There is one road on Cape Wrath, leading from the ferry dock to the lighthouse. "Road" is a generous description nowadays. Halfway along it an abandoned transit van sits in the landscape, slowly rusting away but providing some shelter for hikers during the winter.

We are between weather systems today. This evening Storm Claudia will arrive with 24 hours of wind and rain. But, until then, we can gaze at the horizon and watch the sun set.

I’ve written to Marks and Spencer’s to let them know how to improve. I’ll update you on progress.

It's felt like this all week down here in the West Country. Water everywhere, low grey skies, and both seemed to stretch out endlessly.

This is in fact the Ceredigion coast taken a couple of summers ago. Nevertheless it feels apt.

It stopped raining and so I went out and ran for 10 miles. I tried to have profound thoughts and insights into the condition of humankind but nothing came to me so I looked at swans and was overtaken by a squirrel.

The Bothy at Kearvaig, Cape Wrath.

A profoundly solitary place with an almost crushing sense of melancholia.
