Mid February. The lowest point. Another week of rain and flood warnings. But, this morning, it was light when I went to work and birdsong had returned. Nearly there.

The Teign Gorge.

Cloud moving through the valley from the west, everything shrouded, wrapped and half hidden.

Welcome to February.

January saw us have 4 named storms within 5 weeks in south west England. Not cold so much as extremely wet. And now everything is dank. Really dank.

The river Dart on such a morning.

We Were Gods Once.

A storm crossing Dartmoor. In the last 4 weeks we have had 3 such storms. Everything is soaked to its bones, roads are submerged, and a pier has disappeared.

There's something quite magnificent about how Winter has reminded us of her strength.

Winter. Everywhere.

Its been cold, wet and just generally hard work for at least a month and, much as I enjoy the low light and gloom, I'm ready for a couple of days of winter sunshine, where the air is clear, you can see for miles and the cold doesn't seep into your bones.

Beautiful Dartmoor ?

The northern uplands. A vast, wet and almost featureless series of plains with nothing to admire for miles and miles. Underfoot is tricky to treacherous; always damp, sometimes bog or mire and potholes, hidden in the grass, ready to grab your ankle and turn it.

Turned out nice again........

Northern Dartmoor. To be honest I can't remember quite where but does it matter? Low cloud, rolling hills, winter grass. North Dartmoor being North Dartmoor.

Away from the Teign Gorge and up onto Steeperton looking across the northern sections of Dartmoor towards the west. Late on a summer evening.

The Half Light. The Teign Gorge, Dartmoor.

Trudging up the trail through the woods to the lip of the Gorge. Early morning, ever so quiet.

Dirty Snow - Dartmoor.

Not enough snow to blanket the landscape, hide its warts and bones.

The Pond.

Created by heavy machinery used in harvesting woodland, a series of ponds that glisten with diesel run-off in a woodland near Dartmoor.

Taw Valley, Dartmoor.

Taken 30 minutes after the last image on my feed but 45 minutes before sunrise this is "nautical twilight". A strange time, you are aware that light is changing but you can't actually see how and where. This 10 sec exposure clarifies what is going on.

Nights like These.....

Taken at 5am in the Taw valley on Dartmoor. The moon is setting, it's bitterly cold and utterly beautiful.

Could someone recommend a good read or reads around Central Europe roughly during the Weimar Republic period with a particular focus on the artistic movements it threw up.
Further more a book or series of books that examine the same but with a sole focus on Germany.

Its about to get very cold on the Moor. An image from a few year's ago. A range hut overlooking areas in which the army live fire on the Moor. Always locked so you can't get inside and get warm but you can hunker down and get out of the wind which can be a blessing in itself.
