For #BlackHistoryMonth, we celebrate Dr. DeCongé-Watson, the 15th African-American woman to receive a PhD in #Math. She earned her PhD as a religious sister.

From her Louisiana Creole roots to Chair of Mathematics, she is a cornerstone of #BlackInMath #history.

Dr. Blackwell is one of the greatest mathematicians ever. He's published more than 90 papers & books. He was posthumously awarded the National Medal of Science in 2012 & was the first African American inducted to the National Academy of Sciences.

As a professor at Morgan State & SUNY-Potsdam, Dr Stephens (9th African-American to achieve a #Math PhD) pioneered a teaching method based on the idea that pure math can be learned by anyone if given a caring environment, role models & encouragement.

Dr. Euphemia Lofton Haynes was the first Black woman to earn a PhD in mathematics in America (1943, from CUA) and the first woman to chair the DC Board of Education (1966). Pope John XXIII awarded her the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice in 1959.

We honor Dr. Elbert Cox's achievement as the first Black person in the world to receive a doctorate in mathematics. He was also the first African-American inducted to the American Mathematical Society. Dr. Cox was a WWI veteran.

Kicking off #BlackHistoryMonth2026, we honor Benjamin Banneker (1731-1806). A self-taught polymath and astronomer, Banneker famously predicted solar eclipses in 1789 and 1791 entirely by hand using logarithmic tables & the Spherical Law of Cosines!
