The Award is a legacy and tribute to the work of Dr Bill Law, Founding Fellow of NICEC. His work was recognised internationally and was significant in its impact on the way that career development is conceptualised and practised. The Award will celebrate emerging innovation within the career development sector and importantly, the relationship between research, theory and practice. This award is open to a student who is on or has recently completed (within the last 12 months) a programme such as a level 6 level in career development (including career leaders), PGDip/Masters/SCQF 11, Doctoral students, or a CIPD programme. The submission should present original research or innovative practice in a career or coaching related topic.

In this one-and-a-half hour session Michelle Stewart set the scene drawing from her experience of writing the 'History of the Careers Services in the UK'. This was followed by David Morgan, Chief Executive of the CDI with thoughts on innovation and CDI’s new strategy, and an overview of innovations in Scotland and Northern Ireland. Nikki Lawrence, Chief Executive of Careers Wales, then shared examples of innovative practices and projects taking place in career guidance in Wales including Work in Focus challenges, Future Jobs Wales, uses of AI to help triage needs and to support practitioners, virtual reality tours of careers centres for neurodivergent customers, and the award-winning Careers Craft. Our speakers provided reflections and insights, and it was also a chance to discuss how we can share and learn from such innovative practice across the UK.

Social class often remains overlooked in discussions and interventions aimed at improving diversity, equality and inclusion. Despite shaping lives and opportunities in profound ways social class remains hard to define, measure and discuss for both individuals and organisations. We know that social class shapes individual’s career decisions and outcomes in several ways, whether through influencing ideas around what is possible or desirable, shaping access to social and cultural capital that make some careers easier to pursue than others, or setting hard financial limits on available career pathways. Career services have a key role to play in levelling this playing field and providing equal access to career knowledge, opportunities and aspirations regardless of background. In this NICEC workshop researchers from the Institute for Employment Studies Dr Kyla Ellis and Kate Alexander will share findings from research exploring the role of social class in career decision making, using the construction sector as a case study. Drawing on a review of the literature and qualitative interviews with expert stakeholders, and new and prospective construction workers they will present findings on how social class can act as a ‘ramp or barrier’ to certain careers, and how career services and employers can support people from a variety of backgrounds to find and enter fulfilling careers. The workshop will be interactive, giving practitioners the opportunity to reflect on the research and share their own knowledge and experience of social class and career advice and guidance.

The National Research Conference for Careers Practitioners is an annual event, brought to you in partnership by the CDI, iCeGS, AGCAS and NICEC. Theme for 2026: Sharing and showcasing practitioner research The upcoming National Research Conference for Careers Practitioners will focus on supporting careers practitioners in all settings to share their research, showcasing a range of excellent work across the whole careers sector. We’ll also be considering how practitioners can engage effectively with research and the importance of evidence-informed careers practice. As ever, we will have a range of expert keynotes, panel speakers and diverse parallel sessions for attendees, and a research poster fair open to all careers practitioners. For the first time, the conference is completely free for all those working in careers and employability, or with an interest in this area.

This issue could not be more relevant or timely, arriving amid global events—such as the rolling back of progressive programmes in the US—that directly impact hard-fought freedoms and equity. We adopt the expanded framing of JEDI to foreground the structural and systemic dimensions of inequality that traditional EDI approaches often miss. This collection insists that to speak of careers without confronting power is to risk reinforcing the very inequities we seek to challenge. Issue 55 establishes career development as an inherently political practice concerned with human flourishing and collective wellbeing.

Thursday 2nd October 2025 2–4pm (UK time)

This two-hour session will comprise a series of short input sessions, where highlights are shared from the latest research on AI within the context of careers. In addition, we will have a short demonstration of a range of AI applications within the careers field. In addition, this session will be interspersed with interactive, small group discussions in break-out rooms, combined with whole group discussion and sense-making. Here we will reflect upon: what this means for us? How might we draw upon AI in our own careers practice? What questions are we left with? The session will culminate in a sign-posting to additional relevant resources and events to help us to continue with our CPD in this emergent field. As hosts of this session, NICEC Fellows Dr Cathy Brown and Kate Mansfield will guide us through our agenda; they look forward to seeing you there.
