Dear friends, I’m writing with some difficult news. We recently applied for long-term revenue funding through the Books Council of Wales, support that would have secured stability for Broken Sleep Books for the next five years and helped us continue publishing the ambitious, risk-taking, inclusive work we believe in so deeply. Unfortunately, we were not successful. It’s disappointing, of course. We put forward a strong application, had a positive interview, and genuinely believed our publishing programme where we champion low socio-economic status authors, working-class authors, and marginalised authors, while widening access to the arts and degentrifying the arts, reflected the cultural values Wales should be proud to support. Clearly, our idea of cultural value doesn’t fully match the Books Council’s. Sometimes decisions go another way. What hasn’t changed is our commitment. Broken Sleep Books will carry on publishing with the same determination, ambition, and care that has always sustained us, just with fewer resources and a much harder road ahead. "You Will Never Love Less" Eternity and a Day (1998) Time and Memory on the Threshold between Life and Death: The Poet's Journey Christina Tudor-Sideri The end is the end and not the consciousness of the end. I uproot these words from a past conversation about death and let them echo in my head as I cross the bridge connecting a small island in the Black Sea to the path home. I have grown accustomed to these fourteen minutes back-and-forth, to the cry of seagulls, to the faint rays of the winter sun on my skin. Behind me, the formless world roars and rumbles as if entire cities were crumbling into dust, yet all I leave is water. The sound of the wind reminds me of the wind in Homer, of Theo Angelopoulos and his winter landscapes, of snow and sea and the disappearing horizon. There have been many homes. There is no home. Two sides of the same abyss. I think about the wonders and wanderings of life, about being wonderstruck by the trembling of leaves. The wind in the early Lumière films. And again, Homer. What a sea the winds are rising. A tapestry of what I have read and written and discussed in the course of a lifetime weaves itself in the air and falls upon my shoulders, as if to remind me that colder days are coming. In these fourteen minutes, the walk home becomes a journey through the whole of time. Time in its passage, leaving splinters of itself as memories in the brain. Time, all-pervading. Time, like Caravaggio's finger into the wound of existence. Time on film. The journey of others. I have yet to recognize what is it that returns in recollection, nor do I know whether it belongs entirely to me. Nevertheless, I embrace it. It won't be long now. Home.
