Famous Jewish Sport Legends
Brad Ausmus won a few Gold Gloves but none of them were during his time as a Padre. Still a decent Jewish turnout for a team named after Catholic clergy (al achas kama v’kama for STL…a city named after Louis IX, who was canonised for burning the Talmud)

Matt Mervis may have been designated for assignment but he’s getting his Yid Grid call-up today! Matt is currently on the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp, a team name that is both treyf and an oxymoron. We wish him well

Rowdy Tellez LONG gone ... off the Hit It Here Café 😳

You can probably find a Yid for any other California baseball combination but not the Bay Area. I blame John Fisher for this as well

Original Met Joe Ginsberg could have been in any square on the middle column. Kevin Pillar on the bench as usual. Some of the greatest Jewish pitchers of all time played for the Browns/Orioles but none of them got to 6 WAR

First time on the Yid Grid for Alabama-born Fred Sington, who was a national champion and unanimous All-American on the Crimson Tide football team before hitting .271 with the Brooklyn Dodgers and Washington Senators

Sid Gordon played a few games at second base at the Polo Grounds, had a 30+ HR season, and SHOULD be in Cooperstown. Goody Rosen came close to 200 hits one season and is in the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame

First time on the Yid Grid for the extremely Jewishly named Bubby Rossman, the not particularly Jewishly named Dalton Guthrie, Steve Ratzer (the only Jewish Expo) and ger tzedek Lloyd Allen. Plenty of Jews on the bench including Yid Grid workhorses Kevin Pillar and Jason Marquis

I believe this is Micah Franklin’s first appearance on the Yid Grid. Don Taussig on the bench for Astros x Cardinals, had to go with ger tzedek Skip Jutze

Billy Koch could occupy any square in the middle column but it is unclear if he is Jewish, although he IS from Long Island and has the same last name as Alan Koch, a Yid who won a few games for the Tigers and Senators before going back to law school

Once again Ian Kinsler is one hit away from being on the Yid Grid

Moe Franklin raked in the Mountain State League before his cup of coffee in Detroit. After serving in the Navy during WWII, he won a Mexican League championship with the 1946 Alijadores de Tampico but got suspended for defecting by MLB Commissioner Happy Chandler

Ken Holtzman is, of course, the only Jewish pitcher with more wins than Koufax. Fourth on that list is Dave Roberts, who got 47 of his 103 career wins as an Astro (and hit .327 as a Cub)

Max Fried has a Major League-leading 1.29 ERA after another terrific performance today in Colorado.

He's now 7-0 with 67 strikeouts in 11 starts with the @Yankees.

Max Fried has a 1.29 ERA in 11 starts this season.

That's the lowest ERA by a Yankee in any 11-start span within a season since Ron Guidry in 1978.

Steve Stone won the Cy Young in 1980 after going 25-7 for the Orioles and relying heavily on his curveball to do so. It wrecked his arm and he retired two years later

Barry Latman attended Fairfax High School in Los Angeles, where he played on the same team as Jewish major leaguer Larry Sherry

Not a lot to work with today but any Yid Grid where I get to use Rowdy is a good grid
May 22, 2025 at 12:44 PM
Couple of Ryans, Jason Marquis on the bench
May 21, 2025 at 10:58 AM
On the bench: Dave Roberts and Koufax, of course
May 20, 2025 at 12:30 PM
Some familiar faces on today’s Yid Grid, plus Eric Helfand, who collected 18 hits in 105 at-bats with the Athletics

A ROOKIE ON POLE.

Robert Shwartzman — making his first-ever oval racing start in any series — captured pole position Sunday for next weekend’s Indianapolis 500.

Andy and Syd Cohen were brothers. Brian and Spencer Horwitz are not brothers. Fun fact: Syd Cohen gave up Babe Ruth’s last home run as a Yankee. Fun fact 2: Brian Horwitz and Danny Valencia both played summer ball in the Alaska Baseball League, another of my IG obsessions

Not the first time Ian Kinsler has been one hit away from appearing on the Yid Grid. I could have put Hank Greenberg at LF x 1B and Youk at 1B x DH but you know I had to go with the OG Ron Blomberg

Robert Stock threw a no-hitter in the Pony League under-12 world championship
