Python’s True Superpower
Python appears to be everywhere nowadays! How did it happen, that a language that almost died in the Python 2 to 3 process is now the lingua franca a default choice when people talk about programming? There must be some secret superpower and I think I found it!

I'm at a spa trying to get my shit together in a 90ºC (~194ºF) sauna after my 2025 was beautiful madness but madness no less.

I've finally started to write a new newsletter & if you wanna know more about the madness or what's coming up or a cute dog photo, sign up at buttondown.com/hynek
Hynek Did Something
Greetings friend! This is a list for those who’d like to be notified whenever I, Hynek Schlawack, do or publish something noteworthy, somewhere. Examples are new blog posts, YouTube videos, and talks, significant updates to existing work, or if I need to be bailed out of jail. It does not include announcements about new software releases. But it does usually include a cute dog photo. As a thank you for your trust, the emails aren’t just links to content. They contain a kind of “director's commentary”, explaining what I did and why – written as if I’d be explaining it to a friend over a ${{ beverage }}. Since I’m lazy very busy, that means this list is low-volume and shouldn’t exceed ~12 emails per year (you wouldn’t want to miss those rare gems though – right?). Each mail comes with a big unsubscribe button – I cherish my time and attention, so I wouldn’t want to waste yours. The topics are as eclectic as my interests (but mostly Python, Go, DevOps, software engineering), so there should be something in there for everybody! See you in your mailbox! —h P.S. I’m not here to farm email addresses: If you want my content but hate emails, there’s an RSS feed! Most RSS readers and read-it-later applications also offer anonymous inboxes for newsletters. I’m a big fan of Feedbin myself.

the fact that the most important Hynek in #kcd2 is an ugly drunkard that everybody hates but who gets important shit done is beautifully autobiographic 🥲

I needed a simple thing:

1. Create 3000x1000 document.
2. Add a white box as background.
3. Insert a 9 KB SVG.
4. Export as SVG.

Exported SVG sizes:

Inkscape: 9 KB
Affinity Designer 2: 32KB
Affinity (new): 120 KB
Pixelmator Pro: 1 MB

2026 and Inkscape remains the only first-class SVG editor. 😳

I'm not saying 2°C and rain made Tromsø an icy death trap but my Oura ring identified my walk to the bus station as ice skating.

~Everything on Apple TV(+) is underrated, but I really need to go to bat for PALM ROYALE because I want there to be a 3rd season so bad.

Think love child of White Lotus & Only Murders in the Building: Amazing actors with great chemistry having fun in delightful sets while solving mysteries. 11/10

Santa #Python came super early in 2026!

With build 1.4.0, it is now possible to easily dump effective package metadata!

So getting the version of a package in the current directory is now as easy as `pipx run build --metadata 2>/dev/null | jq -r .version`.

how did i not know about tox's version range syntax!? (i.e., 3{9-14} == 3{9,10,11,12,13,14}) 😍

(added in tox 4.25.0 on 2025-03-27) #python

Remember PayPal's Honey scam? It's been a minute (a year, in fact), but MegaLag has just published part two to his Patrons and I'm 11 minutes in and it's already a doozy. Yes, it gets (much) worse.

I know I've glazed Overmind in my last video, but I think I've come to like mprocs more now! It separates the output, is actively maintained, and it works better overall for me: github.com/pvolok/mprocs

it's kinda wild that there's still no widely supported file format for video files that allows multiple subtitle tracks. at this point apple's insistence on not supporting mkv can only be seen as a political decision?

Blip is amazing: it's kinda AirDrop that works over the Internet & locally on iOS, macOS, Windows, and Android – Linux pending. Works with folders and data goes directly, no upload.

I've learned about it from MKBHD and I'm already sad how it'll inevitably go bad.

I have just bought my first Bluray in decades because I refuse to subscribe to another streaming service… it's less than $15 for a whole season… were they always this cheap!?

(I'll rip and stream it locally; my DiskStation/LG combo seems to support AV1 out of the box 🤩)

DK: Bananza light be the game that ruined itself most by self-indulgently never fucking ending. Ever since Junction 2.0 I've been begging it to end but it kept finding ways to keep going. :( At the beginning I loved it, at the end I yelled expletives at it when it just wouldn't end. What a waste.
