My son came to me with a story and hand-drawn maps. I’d never built a game before, but we decided to make one together. Here’s how it began 👇
I’ve been developing software for 28 years — mostly backend systems, some UI —
but I’d never built a game before. Then one day my son, fresh out of high school, came to me with
hand-drawn maps and a story about an orphan in ancient Greece
on a quest to save his quiet home. He didn’t know how to code, but he asked if I could help him build it.
I didn’t know much about game development either —
but I decided to learn. After months of experimenting, failing, and rebuilding,
we got a prototype running. Eight months later, we’ve built multiple levels,
a full story, and a working world —
Nikias and the Fall of Olympus. A father-son adventure — both on screen and off.

Over the many years of Animal Well’s development, friends urged him to release what he had when interest seemed to be high. “I knew where the quality bar was for myself and what people expect out of a game,” Basso says. He didn’t like the idea of “cashing out” on what he felt wasn’t a complete project, despite the long years that had gone into it. “It was hard to explain how much work actually goes into releasing a polished game,” Basso says. “You can't just kind of put pencils down at any point and click the release button on Steam.” How his game debuted mattered. If people like it, “they'll trust you in the future to buy one of another game.”
