Fresh water is disappearing and much of the world is getting drier

Research by @hrishikeshac.bsky.social & @jayfamiglietti.bsky.social shows large swaths of the world are losing vast amounts of water www.latimes.com/environment/... @sean-greene.bsky.social

After moving to Canada, the difference is so obvious! We see school kids happily walking/biking to school in below freezing temperatures. 10 years living in the US, we would hardly see kids around. Unfortunately, same is happening in India as well!
When I share the stat that about 1 in 4 Washingtonians don’t have drivers licenses, people balk when they find out that children are included. It highlights that we don’t actually value children’s mobility.

This Harris poll shows 62% of 8-12 yo have never walked or biked anywhere alone.
Poll Finds Just How How Much We're Sheltering Our Kids & It's Bad
A new survey by The Harris Poll shows just how sheltered and dependent many kids are today.

We are indeed nosediving into a continental-scale #watercrises. Thanks @ianjames.bsky.social and Sean @latimes.com for covering our research @jayfamiglietti.bsky.social @wisegrouporg.bsky.social

Temperature extremes has a tremendous secondary consequence- that of extreme droughts. Since last 5 years or so, Central America is experiencing an accelerated loss of freshwater.
EXTRAORDINARY HEAT IN CENTRAL AMERICA & CARIBBEAN
Record after record in 100% of all the countries every single day of August from 1st to 31st

The minimum temperature at Roatan Island was 29.0C which is

On India's #IndependenceDay, I'd like to bring your attention to its #watercrises
- #India has lost about 15,400 Tmcft of freshwater since 2002. Or 700 Tmcft/yr
-Losses from just seven States exceed 800 Tmcft/yr

'Like a creeping mold that's spreading across the landscape': Separate dry areas around the world are merging into 'mega-drying' regions at an alarming rate, study finds
Unchecked groundwater extraction and climate change have dried continents significantly over the past 22 years, with 101 countries now losing fresh water to the ocean, research reveals.

A reminder that tens of millions of people are being exposed to dangerous levels of wildfire smoke again this summer.

Wildfire smoke can be up to 10 times more harmful to people than other sources of smog

Groundwater (!!) is contributing more to sea level rise than melting in Greenland and Antartica

Groundwater is drying out, heating up, and causing sea level rise
Overuse of groundwater has created zones of “mega-drying” around the world — and caused more sea level rise than Greenland’s ice sheets.

We’re draining aquifers faster than nature can refill them — and the water doesn’t disappear. It ends up in the ocean, quietly raising sea levels. www.propublica.org/article/wate...

Check out our latest study - The global landmass has been losing its stored freshwater, thereby reducing the water available for all of us, as well as aiding in the sea level rise.
