The Mayor of Lisbon, Carlos Moedas called on the European Commission and Commissioner Dan Jørgensen to launch a new EU recovery plan dedicated exclusively to housing, warning that cities will be left exposed once the current Resilience and Recovery funding runs out.

For years, student housing was treated as a niche, seasonal issue. So much that without affordable housing, higher education has become exclusionary.

In a talk between our Danish member, BL & Commissioner Dan Jørgensen, he noted Copenhagen wasn’t always liveable, but decades of dedicated housing policy show what’s possible.

Time to make “affordable” an adjective, not a noun.

Time to show in 2026 that we learn from history.

Our Sec-Gen insisted at an event by the @epc-official.bsky.social that Europe must ensure efficiency gains reach households. Private finance has a role, but public interest cannot be sidelined, especially through public-private partnerships that risk favouring private over social outcomes.

In the Netherlands, housing is the defining issue of today’s elections.

Our State of Housing report clearly says needs will exceed supply by 1M homes by 2031.

The problem is structural, not about scapegoats.

As our Sec-Gen told @artefr.bsky.social, too few public mission banks & limited-profit housing providers mean the market was left to fail on its own. Upcoming public finance should create stability, not speculation.
