House Committee responsible for foreign policy legislation and oversight | Ranking Member (RM) Gregory W. Meeks
RM @meeks.house.gov: Trump believes he can bomb the world’s problems away. It’s reckless, an abuse of power and, in this case, does nothing to make Nigerians or Americans safer. Trump’s not helping communities terrorized by violent armed groups—only devastating them with bombs and foreign aid cuts.

The Trump admin scrambles to justify its illegal military actions in Venezuela, except in court where they know it won’t hold up to scrutiny.

Easy way to spot the lie is when there’s a giant delta between what Trump says in public and what his admin says in court.

Greenland belongs to its people. The Trump admin's reckless statements are destabilizing, dangerous, and undermine the very foundation of Article 5 and the NATO alliance.

Statement from Ranking Member @meeks.house.gov following yesterday's classified briefing on the Trump administration's military action in Venezuela:
January 6, 2026 at 4:32 PM
Trump wants to “run” Venezuela but refuses to deliver affordable healthcare and lower the cost of living for the American people.
Reporter: How long do you expect the U.S. to run Venezuela

Trump: I would like to do it quickly but it takes time. Their infrastructure is rotted. It is very dangerous. Oil is very dangerous. We will take a lot of money out so we can take care of the country.

For weeks Ranking Member @meeks.house.gov has called on Republicans, including Chairman Mast, to hold public hearings. Every request was denied while the admin has continued to mislead Congress and the American people about the purpose of its escalating military actions in the Western Hemisphere.
🚨🚨 RM @meeks.house.gov is demanding this committee hold a hearing on the Trump admin’s unauthorized military strikes in the Caribbean and Pacific that have killed at least 37 people.

Congress must reclaim its constitutional authority over matters of war and peace.

5/ Trump is undoing decades of international law the U.S. helped shape, and returning the international system to one of “might makes right” and open conflict.
January 3, 2026 at 7:50 PM
4/ This “attack on sovereignty,” as Trump put it, sets a dangerous precedent to other nations. Trump is returning the U.S. to an era of imperialism and conquest—his “Donroe Doctrine” gives a free pass to Xi to seize Taiwan, or to Putin to reconstitute the Soviet Union.
January 3, 2026 at 7:50 PM
3/ The administration’s press conference made clear there was no imminent threat to the U.S., certainly not one that justified military action without congressional authorization. These actions violate both U.S. and international law and, by Trump’s own admission, this is not a limited operation.
January 3, 2026 at 7:50 PM
2/ Trump’s comments make clear the administration’s military strikes were never about drugs. They were about regime change and oil. Yet the administration has no plan for what comes next, locking the U.S. into an expensive and protracted nation building exercise. This is not America first.
January 3, 2026 at 7:50 PM
1/ RM @meeks.house.gov: Trump claims the U.S. “will run Venezuela” and is willing to put “boots on the ground” and take Venezuelan oil. This is the language of forever wars, committing U.S. forces and American taxpayers to a dangerous and open-ended foreign occupation.

RM @meeks.house.gov: The UN is right—El Fasher is a crime scene. Congress must work to end this conflict and pass my Sudan bill. It sanctions those committing atrocities, halts US arms sales to countries fueling the war and bolsters civilian protection.

The Trump admin must immediately brief Congress on these strikes and its longer-term objectives. If it is serious about reducing violence in Nigeria, it will need a comprehensive strategy that includes a development component—one Secretary Rubio dismantled earlier this year.

This administration is only for free speech when it agrees with it.

Using “free speech” as a pretext to punish those critical of Trump and Musk, or advocating for digital safety, undermines the law itself. That’s a dangerous precedent, Secretary Rubio.
