Any system that requires the people it permanently altered to seek permission to name the harm has already failed the ethical threshold of legitimacy. That is why the post-reform adoptee critique is sovereignty-based — because reform presumes authority that was never earned.

The paradox isn’t the adoptee’s identity. The paradox is expecting a system built on erasure to be understood by those who’ve never had to live inside it.
