Ever used a microscope to break out of an escape room?

The EMBL programme ‘Summer of Science’ offered children, families, and even scientists a unique way to experience science through a collection of creative activities.

This week I had a great time sharing @teamfoldscope.bsky.social resources with Spartanburg School District 7 science educators and the Rock Hill Schools 7th graders at the career day hosted by Rawlinson Road Middle School!

Inspiring educators and students one microscopic view at a time!

Adventures In Microscopy: Fall Leaves

Is anyone else getting #Wicked vibes?

Maple and oak leaves viewed under a #Foldscope 2.0 at 50x magnification.

Adventures In Microscopy: Desmids!

This sample was gathered at the base of a waterfall I saw while hiking.

Desmids have high degrees of symmetry which remind me of paper snowflakes. Enjoy!

Adventures In Microscopy: Marigold Pollen
Each of the pollen grains is covered in tiny little spikes. As always, I love how lighting can change the appearance so much! Enjoy! (#Foldscope 2.0, 340X)

"w/ the little creatures, nobody really cares [if it is alive or dead.] But I think it makes a difference in how you connect to a creature. There is a subconscious connection between looking eye to eye w/ a creature that is alive vs a creature that is sort of crumpled up." -Anand Varna
This photo shows a parasitic worm coming out of an infected house cricket. 😱 It was taken by Anand Varma, who snaps intensely detailed images of tiny creatures.
A Photographer Captures Nature In Mind-Boggling Detail
Ever seen the hairs on a bee’s eyeball? Or the contours of a hummingbird's tongue? Science photographer Anand Varma takes us behind the lens.

Adventures In Microscopy: Marigold Flower Petals (Part 2)

I put a marigold flower petal on a slide and enjoyed seeing some of the microscopic color variations and textures that are invisible to the naked eye!

Adventures In Microscopy: Marigold Flower Petals

The petals of a marigold are perfect for doing a cast to see the surface features under my #Foldscope 2.0. They may appear smooth, but there is a lot of texture!

Adventures in Microscopy: Marigold Leaves
I made a cast of the leaves (using clear nail polish) to observe the stomata under a #Foldscope 2.0. These little "mouths" that "breathe" for the leaves never cease to amaze me!

Eggs on top of a stevia leaf (not worried about detection I guess!). They looked white, but there were actually reddish markings on them! Foldscope 2.0, 50X, darkfield

Sample found on the shore of Owen Beach in Tacoma, WA. It looks like a sheet of green plastic wrap in the water, but under my Foldscope 2.0, the cells pop out! 340X + 5X zoom
