We walked through a blizzard today, along the north east coast of #Scotland. The landscape was transformed to an engraving by the snow and grey winter light.

Palestinian girls playing in the snow outside Al-Quds, Palestine, Christmas 1921.
Merry Christmas one and all, and peace on earth for all who need it most.

This majestic beech tree is a real sentinel of #history - guarding the gate to Forglen Auld Kirk in Aberdeenshire. This is where the relics of St Columba resided and from whence Robert the Bruce borrowed them for Bannockburn. The tree trunk is 4m in diameter so it is extremely old! #Scotland

Bonnie Prince Charlie knew that France wasn’t going to send help. There were no supportive risings in England. Marching south would be a shortcut to a miserable grave.
They set off north, retracing their steps to Carlisle, to avoid being intercepted. #history #Scotland

It’s a cold and bleak night tonight, but not as bleak as it was OTD 1745. Bonnie Prince Charlie reluctantly gave the order to his army to return to #Scotland. They had arrived in Derby two days earlier but, despite being so close to that London, they realised that no more help was coming. #history

Bonnie Prince Charlie entered Derby with his army, OTD 1745. This was the high water mark of his 1745 adventure. If he had not turned back then, #history would’ve repeated itself. His army would’ve been massacred where Boudica was cut down 1700 years earlier.

Some years ago I conducted some research with @a9630.bsky.social into the Haggis Chase Royale, which took place every St Andrew’s Day in the C16th. We discovered King James VI’s haggis hunting halberd in Stirling Castle - a great relic of Scotland’s #history

Happy St Andrew’s Day - traditional start of the wild haggis hunting season in Scotland. Iron Age folk built Haggis habitats called brochs, to conserve them. Climate change has now made the true wild haggis a critically endangered species, restricted to the tops of the highest mountains. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

We paid our respects to the late, great, Betty Boothroyd MP, at St George’s, Thriplow, near Cambridge. Her motto, ‘I speak to serve’ is both wise and inspirational. #history

#JFK died exactly 60 years ago. The world has travelled a long way from optimism to pessimism since then. #history #JFK60

I have just heard Florence Nightingale spinning in her grave, following the latest Covid inquiry evidence. Boris didn’t understand the statistics and graphs of the epidemic. FN invented the pie chart to teach Whitehall idiots the reality of disease in Crimea. #history

Happy birthday to brilliant Bonnie Greer - great champion of the #arts, heritage, education, human rights and concord. And, of course, writer, dramatist, broadcaster and inspiring truth-sayer.

Captain James Cook, was tragically fortunate to have his life and career cut down, aged just 50. He had already descended into sad alcoholism and brutality. He has enjoyed 250 years of heroism but is now being critically reassessed for his role in colonialism. #history

Happy birthday to Captain James Cook, b1728. Explorer and avant-garde of colonialism. To some, a #Yorkshire hero, to others, the first cloud of the storm. #history

The latest depressing news from the artist formerly known as Twitter, has confirmed that I’ve ridden the last freedom moped out of nowhere city. Reinstating haters will drive away corporate sponsors. They will not want to float amidst extremist effluent.
