Portrait of a Woman c. 1590, Nicholas Hilliard (Met Museum) Catalogue notes: "Although its present condition is far from good, it seems to be an authentic miniature by Nicholas Hilliard, painted with much refinement on the small scale he increasingly used throughout the 1590s"

To have your miniature done by Isaac Oliver or Nicholas Hilliard, you had to be reasonably well-off. And maybe well-connected too. So the 'unknown woman' [or man] category is always intriguing. Here are some 'unknown women' c. 1595-1615.
