It explains why his son can just wander the land investigating whatever cases he pleases." "Goodness. Good work if you can get it. At least he seems friendly, if a bit unusual." Cyr smiled ruefully. "Unusual puts it mildly. I've never met such a disturbingly strange man, or one who strangeness so gathers around. It's if he's blessed by the gods themselves, and cursed at the same time, to be something that transcends all logic and understanding." Adkiragh leaned in, grinning. "So he's a man who scares you?"

When Adkiragh expressed no knowledge of Cyr's whereabouts, the man leaned in across the bar, squinting suspiciously at him through the monocle. Adkiragh reflexively set his fingers against the knife he kept sheathed beneath the bar, though his smile continued to be pleasant. "My apologies I cannot be of more help, good ser." "Then since he is not here, I suspect," the man announced. "That you have actually built this entire bar around Master Blyme's house, stone by stone, and converted it into this so-called 'Hard Place' as a disguise for your criminal activities!"

"You don't understand!" Cyr insisted. He flung his arms wide, pacing the space before the bar. "One heretic in view means more must be hiding in the shadows, waiting to contaminate the innocent with their poison. I was trained to see those signs, because to overlook them meant dooming an entire population. A sinister burning to the eyes, fingernails growing into points like claws, fiendish scales corrupting the skin—" "Horns?" Adkiragh put in flatly. "Ah-well, horns would certainly be a sign of…." Cyr paused, trailing off as his gaze wandered across Adkiragh's face. Chitinous dark scales framed a lilac-grey face whose narrowed eyes glowed bright gold from the limbal rings magically inked into the irises. And, of course, there were the horns. "Ah. Mm." Cyr chewed on his lower lip as he tried to figure out if there was a way to walk this back. (There was not.)

An Inspector's talents are greatly in demand at the Idyllshire market. (This is a 2-part piece so switching the prompts for the days to fit each half better.) archiveofourown.org/works/648968...
It had been such a pleasure to watch how the Idyllshire crowds had gone from cautious disinterest to following him around, tugging at his pant legs, calling his name across the plaza, or in one case actively lobbing a tome at his head with zero context. He'd had to set up his own stall and make the patrons form an orderly queue while he politely listened to their requests. Much of it was arbitrating disagreements. Unlike a lot of adventurers Cyr was completely literate, which meant a lot of explaining to sellswords exactly what was in the contracts they'd signed. Adkiragh picked up a few folded-paper charms from Khloe and a bag of sausage buns from Woolnix, slowly making his way across the crowded market to Cyr's table. By the time he arrived, Cyr was staring intensely at two brass and leather contraptions laid out on his table, while two goblins were shouting accusations at each other in front of him. "What's their quarrel?" Adkiragh muttered, leaning in to peer at the devices too.

Adkiragh was beaming at his bar's new orchestrion, installed just this morning by its goblin creators, with the warmth usually reserved for wedding days and firstborn children. It was a mass of piping and gears, as most goblin-made contraptions were, and shown like a sculpted breastplate in the morning sun from the windows. "I remember the archbishop had one in his personal chambers," Cyr noted. It was smaller than this, no bigger than a hatbox. I saw it when I visited him with Ser Charibert, right after it was installed. He said it was to save the labor of having musicians climb all the way up there to play for him." Cyr paced around the device, inspecting it with an intensity that seemed to hint he suspected the device of some sort of malfesiance. Adkiragh had come to find the intensity charming. Back in the Steppe he'd made his name as a warrior and leader of men, but he'd never had the same knack for the hunt that Cyr did.

Adkiragh stared until he noticed Cyr's sharp blue eyes were open, watching himself be watched. "You fought a dragon?" Adkiragh asked, gesturing to the more chaotic burns across Adkiragh's front. Cyr shook his head. "No, Inquisitors were not sent against the horde. I gained these from my former master, Ser Charibert. Quite skilled at his craft, and more so at making his…opinions known. I gained these while in his service." Adkiragh shuddered at the thought. This Charrybear must be a demon of a man. At worst a cane should be used on a mishbehaving junior, not tongues of flame, and even then only to correct a truly dangerous error… And yet Cyr was touching one of the burns with an expression bordering on fondness, as if they were marks from a lover.

I'm cheating a little for Day 1 and reposting an earlier Cyr Blyme/Adkiragh Adarkim (from Custom Deliveries) fic, since it both fits the prompt and lets me reshare the lovely fanart @magitekwitch.bsky.social did for it. archiveofourown.org/works/46406980
Cyr Blyme and Adkiragh kissing. The text says "Then I think, as the owner, I declare this bar closed." The lower text says "Happy birthday! <3 2/26". All save one, who Adkiragh had left carefully undisturbed as he'd touched every other drunkard gently on the shoulder and encouraged them to stagger out the door. Private Inspector Cyr Blyme - Hyur, blonde, somewhere in his twenties, and very much on the hunt for something. Adkiragh did not know much of this Private Inspector (and for that matter was still a little unclear on what an 'Inspector' was and what function it performed in the community) but that was not uncommon in Idyllshire. People frequently came to Idyllshire to lose their pasts. If it wasn't relevant and you weren't told, you didn't ask.
