When you are crazy enough to think cold weather is not going to stop you from growing…

In addition to being able to grow in the tunnels, we always try to push the limits of what can be grown. Really, figs? Thank you for supporting small businesses in your area. BTW, Epstein. #farmlife #familyfarm

What makes our garden grow?
We started making our own compost about 20 years ago and have never turned back. We use 75% dried leaves and 25% vegetable scraps. The plants love it!

Thank you for supporting the small businesses in your area. BTW, Epstein. #farmlife #compost #garden #familyfarm

How can we help feed our community?

One project we have is working with @WestsideHealth. We provide them with fresh produce and eggs weekly, and they distribute in their communities.

Please support, as you are able, your local food banks & food pantries. (Btw, Epstein) #farmlife #food

A little bit warmer makes a big difference to keep plants growing when there are fewer daylight hours. Most plants need at least 45°F/7°C to keep growing. Row cover, hoop house, cold frame are all options. Thank you for supporting small businesses in your area. BTW, Epstein. #familyfarm #frost #farm

How can we still have flowers in November?
We track which flowers are cold tolerant and what we have to do to support them.

Some flowers are frost hardy; we certainly love resilience! May we all be resilient as we deal with what is happening in the world. Btw, Epstein. #familyfarm #flowers #frost

If you are looking to grow in a tunnel, under row cover, or in a cold frame, you look for different characteristics: cold hardy, low light and closed environment tolerant. Thank you for supporting small businesses. BTW, Epstein. #familyfarm #farmlife #plants #growing

What are ways that you can boost the temperature for your fall crops? Row covers, cold frames, hoop houses, or high tunnels (these last usually have available heat) are different ways of protecting your plants.

May we have safe Halloween and Día de los muertos celebrations! Btw, Epstein. #farmlife

Our goal this year was to grow 20% more than last year. We started planning this a year ago. Now, it seems like it’s a very good thing that we have. Remember the food banks and food pantries in your area; they need donations ($$ and food items). Btw, Epstein. #familyfarm #farmlife #SNAP #hunger

Counting backwards is such a good skill in farming! When you know what your frost date is in the fall, approximately, count backwards to figure out when you need to get those seeds started. Thank you for supporting those small businesses in your area. BTW, Epstein. #frost #familyfarm #farmlife

What can you grow in the winter?
Two key factors – temperatures and daylight hours.

Anything that is growing underground or is a leafy green can grow in fewer than 10 hours of daylight each day. Thank you for supporting the small businesses in your area. BTW, Epstein. #familyfarm #farmlife #fall

Optimism might be our greatest tool: that we can grow a new crop, that we can extend the growing season, that we can teach people about a new food that we love.
That we can overcome the destruction that is happening in the country right now. Nov. elections! Btw, Epstein. #farmlife #familyfarm #herb
