Re-sharing this clip from an optional conversation in Final Fantasy VII Remake for no particular reason.
Even Scarlet takes on a whole new reading with our current secretary of homeland security. There’s a kind of person who fantasizes about achieving power through being a combination of cruel and hot, but they can never get that second part. Plus, no way these bozos could pilot a mech.

Surely Shinra wouldn’t allow quasi-religious pursuit of a Promised Land justify their abuses. Surely the galactic empire wasn’t only around for 20 years. Surely Weyland-Yutani wouldn’t keep throwing bodies at the xenomorph for decades.

Yeah, I totally buy all that now.

Part of this is the remake filling in a lot of gaps with AVALANCHE’s ideology and rewriting Barret to be a compelling leader, but it also belongs to a greater trend of pop culture from my youth that seemed too outrageous in its depictions of fascism and capitalism looping back into realism.

When talk about a FFVII remake first started 20 years ago, I was convinced it was a terrible idea, one reason being the hook of scrappy ecoterrorists vs a cartoonishly evil corporation felt very nineties.

Now replaying the remake for a 4th time, every idea in that game continues to feel prescient.

As if this week couldn’t get any worse, I just heard the MISAMO cover of “NEW LOOK.”

DHS to America: don't believe you're lyin' eyes
DHS Is Lying To You About ICE Shooting a Woman
At least four videos show what really happened when ICE shot a woman in Minneapolis on Wednesday. DHS has established itself as an agency that cannot be trusted to live in or present reality.

(Also catching up on all the Netflix releases I’ve missed in the years since season four. Ultraman Rising rules and I don’t know why we aren’t just talking about it all the time??)

I saw the Stranger Things finale at the cinema for New Years. It was whatever, but the girls behind us were going THROUGH it. Genuinely love that for them.

After 25+ years, I finally beat Final Fantasy Tactics. 🫠

The original PlayStation disc was my first #FinalFantasy game, and I did NOT understand it/never made it very far. I still don’t know if I have the patience to go back and try to beat the classic build. But I beat the Ivalice Chronicles!

What if the third FFVII remake game leans all the way into its alternate timelines to have a two hour Ivalice jag?

This could potentially be read as part of SH’s greater interrogation of what it means to be Japanese vs American horror. Most SH games have streets built for cars and trucks, so encounters are avoidable due to their size. This is not the case for the small, old, winding roads of Ebisugaoka.

The argument is always that Silent Hill games never have good combat, but I think Silent Hill F suffers from its combat MOST approaching conventional while not quite hitting the mark, a gap further highlighted by a high rate of forced encounters.

Silent Hill F is beautiful; I’m still chewing on the story and will probably go back and play again now that the combat has been patched. I’m leaning towards it being a series best?

I finally started #silenthillf last night. I am already mourning my cancelled soundtrack pre-order.

And I guess the other big defining feature of Death Stranding is all-caps AUDACITY, and DS2 has that in spades.

To be fair, I don’t think there’s a way to capture that feeling of walking into the unknown again unless they started again from the ground up.

Death Stranding 2’s world opens much earlier. I understand it’s a sequel, and some people were turned off by just how slow the first was, but I miss that slow build. Still, it felt like once I unlocked roads I was off to the races. I barely experimented with other transportation methods.

In my mind, DS is most characterized by its interesting balance of the inherent loneliness of exploration with a cooperative spirit. In the first, there was a real sense of work and discovery when first entering an area, and it was so satisfying to finally connect and see other player structures.

90ish hours later, I finished the story in Death Stranding 2. Mostly enjoyed it (clearly), but I think I liked the first one better as a whole?

This message is for porters on my Death Stranding 2 server and those porters only: I’m 80 hours in and NEED to finish the story so I can play Silent Hill F. I can’t be the only one maintaining our roads, guys. Help a porter out.

And then AKB48—who, sure, I’d consider legacy now—is straight up just releasing an AI-written single trained on one of their usual songwriters, because AKB48 has always been about ruthless calculus at its core. www.bbc.com/news/article...
