A delightful echo of Ainsworth's 'Windsor Castle' to add to the collection (will definitely be mentioning it in the upcoming talk on Herne the Hunter). He even has the owl!!!
‘The Earl of Surrey was suddenly startled by a blue phosphoric light.’

was out at one of these Christmas lights displays. A crowd ignored the lights in favour of a sunset. How sad that after expending all that effort the display's designers were outdone by smth so quotidian as a sunset. How wonderful that in an age of flashing lights, we still find a sunset beautiful.

‘“I’ve been a fool in most things,” said Mortimer quietly, “but I'm not such a fool as not to believe in Pan when I'm down here. And if you're wise you won't disbelieve in him too boastfully while you're in his country.”’ — ‘The Music on the Hill’ (1911)

In 'Living Stones' Ithell Colquhoun writes: 'the newly instituted department for folklore at London University [so not the FLS] is collecting traditions concerned with hunting'. Is this a collection that still exists in some form? @folkloretodmorden.bsky.social @folkloresociety.bsky.social
