Bad Toronto movie theatre news: Cineplex Beaches, a six-screen multiplex opened in 1999 under the Alliance Atlantis brand, is closing end of day Feb. 17.

In a move destined to infuriate copy editors (among other accomplishments), Warner Bros. is insisting that critics use quotations marks when citing the title of Emerald Fennell’s “Wuthering Heights.” This is not a joke.

I cannot adequately convey how much I loved Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie. Read what @hertzbarry.bsky.social has to say about it - and then go see this movie Feb 13 when it opens. Elbows up, laugh your head off, go Canada. NTBTSTM is so, so great.

While onstage to mark his film’s inclusion in TIFF’s Canada’s Top Ten program, THE THINGS YOU KILL director Alireza Khatami rips into every fest that rejected him … including TIFF, which passed on film for the fest itself (and after, in his words, paying $600 to rent a Lightbox screen to screen it).

Interesting tidbit from TIFF’s panel just now on the fest’s upcoming official market: there’s talk (just “talk”) of shutting down more streets to enable easier convenience for attendees.

The story of NIRVANNA THE BAND THE SHOW THE MOVIE begins in 2007. Or is it 2023? Maybe 2016? Join me as I follow the time bandits — from Toronto to Berlin to Austin to dimensional planes unknown — behind the funniest Canadian film ever made. www.theglobeandmail.com/culture/film...

NEW: The Capitol Theatre, Yellowknife's only movie theatre (and one of only two independent cinemas in all of Canada's three territories), is closing March 31 after its lease was not renewed: "It is not known what will be done with the space we currently occupy."

The Fast & Furious series is now 25 yrs old. It's a massive, multi-billion-dollar global phenomenon. But it gets little of the analysis that Star Wars, Bond, the Marvel universe + other epic franchises do.

Now a book aims to fill that gap. Great interview with author Barry Hertz on @numlock.com.

Trying to stay humble as always, but I think this feature from NIRVANNA THE BAND THE SHOW THE MOVIE’s world premiere at SXSW almost a year ago holds up well. www.theglobeandmail.com/arts/film/ar...

Brett Ratner’s vile and vapid MELANIA balances a casually cruel worldview with terminally dull aesthetics. Best viewed as a game of Spot the Bootlicker. Cineplex should market their popcorn tubs as commemorative barf buckets. www.theglobeandmail.com/culture/film...
Amazon’s painful Melania documentary is an unintentionally perfect portrait of American cruelty

NEW: Some genuinely great news for Canadian film and television: This year’s Canadian Screen Awards will be simulcast by CBC, Bell Media, and Corus in rare display of collaboration. (Of Canada’s media giants, only Rogers is sitting this deal out.) www.theglobeandmail.com/culture/film...

Trying to think of the last time a series so deftly swerved from its starting point as INDUSTRY, and I guess the next best example is HALT AND CATCH FIRE. Sidebar: It is a historic crime that Ken Leung hasn’t been Emmy-nominated yet.

Bezos could've spent the $40M it cost to buy Ratner's MELANIA on any number of things. Like The Washington Post, which is set to cut 300 staff. Or the 16,000 employees Amazon laid off today. More time for those ex-employees to see MELANIA. Ideally twice! www.theglobeandmail.com/culture/film...

My two favourite Jasons (Statham and Momoa) have ostensibly perfect dead-of-January movies opening this week. But the one going straight to Prime feels too big and fun for streaming, while the one opening theatrically feels more at home, well, at home. www.theglobeandmail.com/culture/film...
