Hen’s Christmas wall of shame – 2025 - The Cairngorm Reindeer Herd
I thought I might start an annual blog of photos I've taken over the winter season, of things that are supposed to be reindeer - and aren't. Although it turns out that being as I didn't really go anyw...

This week's blog is written by Daisy! Daisy volunteered with us for a week in May and we were delighted to welcome her back as an official reindeer herder in August. Her blog is a fantastic read, all about her first month working as a herder... enjoy! 🤩

My first month as a reindeer herder - The Cairngorm Reindeer Herd
It was 2022 I think, when I found a book in a local Waterstone’s in Kent entitled ‘An Arctic Life’ by Tilly Smith. At that point I had a road trip with my dog planned for the Cairngorms and fancied a ...

The gorgeous Spy out free-ranging last week! 🤩

At 14 years old, Spy is one of our older girls and has been retired from motherhood for the past couple of years. Retirement is clearly suiting her and this year she has managed to grow an incredibly impressive set of antlers! 💪

We regularly hear the phrase '4 seasons in 1 day' in the Highlands, but yesterday it was more like '4 seasons in 1 Hill Trip'! On our 2.30pm Hill Trip yesterday we experienced a bit of everything from sunshine to a very intense (and rather painful!) hailstorm. It certainly got the reindeer moving!

Building up to calving
With only a week or so to go until we could be seeing the first reindeer calves born, here are a few things which are preparing us, and the reindeer, ready for the big event. There aren’t any pre-nata...

Pinto with the white face will be five years old in the spring and her daughter Orinoco on the right will be two. The pair are still bonded and are often found side by side. They were both eating from the same pile of food but thankfully decided to look up at the same moment to get this pic! 📸😍

Zambezi is almost 2, she's one of the largest of the 'rivers of the world' cohort. 💪

Female reindeer's antlers are much lighter than the male's. They can keep them all winter, after the bulls cast them. Giving the females an advantage and ensures they get the best of the food whilst pregnant. 🤯

Sign a proper petition this evening, not one of those comedy Musk ones...

Ban Driven Grouse Shooting!

It destroys ecosystems, is ridden with criminality, causes flooding, concentrates land with a tiny minority of bloodthirsty maniacs, and after all that, is a shit excuse for a sport anyway.

We've made it across to Bluesky... Christmas chaos here just now though, so might be a wee while before we get properly up and running with this account.

In the meantime though, here's Macchiato and his mum Marple! He's a very friendly young lad and has definitely inherited mum's love of food! 🤩
