MPs’ pay and expenses are still touchy subjects for citizens. This paper by @helenbramah.bsky.social finds that mentioning the topic of politicians’ remuneration has a significant negative effect on political trust which is difficult to overcome.

Does independent regulation of MPs’ pay and expenses improve political trust? This paper tests how framing of information about politicians’ remuneration affects citizens’ trust judgements, drawing on original data from two pre-registered survey experiments.

Super excited to see the second paper from my PhD now published!

I find that making MPs' pay and expenses more salient significantly reduces political trust. Raising awareness of the regulator mitigates this effect when mentioning pay, but does not improve trust when expenses are mentioned.
