This scene from the legend of Kópakonan (Seal Woman) depicts her returning as something as terrifying as a troll after her seal husband and children were killed. She curses the men of Mikladalur, vowing revenge: “Some will die at sea, others will fall from the mountains, until the dead can link hands around the shores of Kalsoy.” Currently, I’m anxiously waiting for a response from the Faroese Culture Fund to see if I’ll receive a grant to illustrate and modernize Faroese legends for audiences unfamiliar with these powerful stories. I’ve been applying for this grant for five years without success. This is a monumental project that requires extensive time and research to bring to life, and I hope this time it becomes a reality. Fingers crossed! 🤞
