My hobby is hobbies.

Native gardening, knitting, spinning, weaving, TTRPGs, miniatures painting, and photographing cool bugs- that's just the current ones.
Squirrel just pulled a disappearing act on this confused fox. I saw the fox chasing it across my field as the squirrel made a beeline for this spot. Turns out, that's where my gutter downspout ends and the squirrel ran in there and hid until the fox gave up and wandered off.

I forgot how much I love the percussion of an oak in autumn. The

whoosh

crack

swish

thump

thud

of an acorn losing its cap, hitting a leaf, bouncing off the earth and coming to rest.

The Hatchening is upon us! 44 days after the egg sac appeared, we have spiderlings! Dozens of them, perhaps 60-70? They're all very hard to count.

Congrats to mama Tabitha, who I sadly have not seen in three days. I suspect she has shuffled off this mortal coil, if Charlotte's Web didn't lie to me.

Native Mantis Alert!

Found this Carolina Mantis chilling by my hose reel when I was putting up some deer fencing around the sourwood trees I planted today.

I'm so stoked, this is the first time I've seen one in real life.

I love that my office window faces my field with the woods beyond it. I get to see some really fun stuff while I'm working all day. This morning, it was two young bucks sparring their way across the creek and up into the woods. Both were pretty clumsy but you gotta learn somewhere. Good luck, lads.

I should start every morning like my resident red-shouldered hawks do: yelling at the sky.

Day 15 of Spiderling Watch. A second egg sac has joined the fray. Tabitha continues to ensnare more insects but hasn't shredded any of the new ones. Seems she decorated for spooky season early and is leaving it at that.

I would love to be part of the conversation on MSNBC related to the Kimmel story and it's chilling effects on first amendment, but unfortunately I was terminated by MSNBC for stating that "hateful thoughts lead to hateful words which lead to hateful actions".

I have written and deleted a lot of posts but I keep thinking about how the brutal assassination of Minnesota State senator Melissa Hortman, her husband Mark, and their beloved dog Gilbert in June did not prompt this same level of calls for empathy, sympathy, and flags at half-mast.

It's Day 4 of Spiderling Watch. Nothing yet, but mama Tabitha has shredded another lanternfly and decorated the entrance to her hidey hole with it. A stylish, if somewhat frightening, choice.

It’s funny seeing all the right wing talking heads try and condemn violence, only to be reposted with screenshots of their own calls to violence.

Your ethos means nothing if your praxis contradicts it.

It’s gonna be so weird watching establishment dems be performatively sadder about this than they were about the colleague and her husband and dog who got shot and killed

I'm not a spiderologist, but looks like Tabitha, the funnel spider on my deck, has made an egg sac. I would be a tad more excited if it wasn't only 20 inches from the door I use every day. Girl, you know you can't keep an eye on all 50-10,000 of those lil spiderlings and I can't either.

This is Tabitha, the funnel spider that lives on my deck. She is pictured with the mangled corpse of a spotted lanternfly she caught. I'm not sure what prompted her to tear it limb from limb and spread its parts around her web, but I like to think of it as a stern warning to other lanternflies.

The deer out here are constantly proving why my plant-fencing budget needs to be so high.

I saw my very first zebra swallowtail (ever) and my first monarch (at my house). Sadly, both were so quick that I couldn't get a pic of either. But I'm so, so delighted to be blessed by their visits. Next year there will be more pawpaws and more milkweed for them to enjoy so I hope more come.

I found an interloping plant in my native plant garden. I didn't recognize it which 99% of the time means it's some invasive bullshit. But this turned out to be the rare 1% instance of a native! This is Forked Bluecurls, Trichostema dichotomum and its tiny flowers are real stunners.

Found two bees napping in the Spotted Beebalm early in the morning. The hummingbird stopped by several times, too. I'm glad my native garden is getting popular.
