"Official recognition is valuable because the shaka is so culturally resonant, so much a part of this place. The gesture is a source of origin stories, family stories, and a way to talk about life in Hawaii." #shaka #hawaii

When I can't sleep, I launch projects. (I've not been sleeping much lately, obviously!) I've been mulling the land acknowledgement practice for a while, and feel it should be more common in Hawaii. It's a niche cause, for sure, but at least there's a website now!
Hawaiian Land Acknowledgements
Land or territorial acknowledgements, also known as "welcome to country," are formalized rituals to recognize indigenous places and cultures in events and programs.
