One of the cornerstones of effective writing is specific detail.

But what if you want to be ambiguous? What if that’s the whole point?

The Art (and Importance) of Specifically Ambiguous Writing
In any storytelling genre, authors should hold some information back, developing intrigue and encouraging readers to keep reading

This cannot be emphasized enough. The word "first" is the one to focus on. Finishing a first draft is a huge milestone and one worth celebrating - but remember that that's when the work truly begins.

"Reptiles" is a short work of dystopian horror inspired by the overturning of Roe v. Wade. All profits are donated to UltraViolet, an organization fighting for reproductive rights and women's rights.

When you sit down to write tomorrow, remember this: You should probably re-fold the laundry, and the coffee mugs in the cupboard need rearranging, and you should consider alphabetizing your stationary supplies.

That's how REAL writers do it.

Authors, don't measure your success against others. YOU get to define what success means to you.

Finishing a first draft is a success.

A productive round of edits is a success.

Getting signed is a success.

Selling 10,000 books is a success.

Selling ONE book is a success!

Writing can be therapy.

It can help us sort out our thoughts and better understand how we feel about ourselves, the state of the world, and our place in it.

It can help us clarify our thoughts.

It can help us make sense of the senseless.

It can help us see in the dark.

An author friend just told me about another scam. He received an email praising his book at length. It was clearly written by AI. It finished with a pitch for book marketing services.

The takeaway is simple: don't get sucked in by lavish praise, especially when it's AI generated
