This is the painting done from the recent watercolor sketch I posted. I’m not sure if this is done. The clouds are deliberately old fashioned (Rococo maybe?) so it feels like it needs some cherubs. But instead of cherubs I’m thinking about adding some birds. Nelson Pond, oil on canvas, 15x30”

I continued playing with this plein air sketch in my basement. It’s just a struggle between the strange shapes I love in the farm fields and trying to make “a picture” or scene. I don’t have an interest in painting little tree branches but feel like I’m supposed to.

It was frosty when I went out this morning. I hadn’t painted outside in a long time. It clouded over before I was half way finished and then it started raining. Of course by the time I got back to my car the sun was back out. This is why I’ve been painting inside more lately.

I’m experimenting with gouache in a small sketchbook of toned paper. The paper is lightweight and designed for drawing and sketching with dry media. A little water with watercolor makes it buckle. Hopefully using gouache thicker will reduce the warping.
