There is certainly some hope that the Gaza deal will hold but it’s important to remember that the last ceasefire agreement collapsed in March before ever reaching phase 2 when Israel reimposed a blockade on Gaza and bombings on the strip resumed.

So what is Qatar going to do about it?

It’s safe to say that if you drop a bomb on the people you’re supposed to be negotiating with, you’re probably not too interested in striking a deal.

Another puzzling move in this trade war drama: Syria, which has almost zero trade with the U.S., was hit with 41% in tariffs by the Trump administration. Russia, however, is not on the list of targeted countries.

On assignment in Damascus in 2011 with @iamarwadamon and @jomanacnn. We often huddled together on the bed and whispered about the next day’s shoots. In Syria, it was always safer to assume that hotel rooms were bugged and we didn’t want to risk divulging our plans or the names of our contacts.

When I wrote about visiting Syria in my memoir, I was pretty convinced I’d never see the day the country would rid itself of the Assad dictatorship. It still feels utterly surreal to witness the events of the last few weeks.

So many Syrians I know are telling me they can’t wait to go back. There will be a mass movement of Syrian exiles returning if they feel that it’s safe.

The fact that Assad’s fall came so many years after that of dictators in other Arab Spring countries hopefully means that the rebel forces will know not to make the same mistakes and that important lessons were learned in the last decade.

I’m still digesting the recent events in Syria and, like everyone, I have no idea what happens next. But when I see video of political prisoners freed after decades, it feels like a real unraveling of something so deeply rooted in the country that few imagined they’d witness it in their lifetime.

This video of children lining up for rice at a food distribution center in Gaza is some of the most devastating footage I’ve watched lately. It came a day after 3 women were crushed to death waiting to buy bread in Deir Al Balah. Our full report on hunger in Gaza comes out tomorrow on @hallieonnbc.

I’m in Jerusalem, watching dvlpts in Aleppo and thinking of how in one year, a domino effect of events has led to a stunning victory for Syrian rebels against the Assad regime. A weakened Hezbollah, Iran on the back foot and Russia focused on Ukraine created the perfect set of circumstances to act.
