#Vikings on TV tend to have a dark wild-looking aesthetic but finds from 10th century #Sweden suggest male interests in colourful fashions, silk, shiny buttons, & fancy hats - all to show status, something also backed up in textual accounts #medievalsky #britishmuseum

An all-too brief thread on what some call the ‘Baltic’ or ‘Second Viking Age’. Its not possible to go into huge amounts of detail but I’ve ref’d primary sources where appropriate.

I cover this topic in the last chapter of my newest book, Forgotten Vikings! #VikingFriday

A large number of finds from Clatterbridge, #Wirral include some which maybe of Viking Age date. Here is an early Medieval lead alloy gaming piece or weight. Similar gaming pieces were found at Torksey and were used in the game of Hnefatafl #medievalsky

Your day is a success when you visit an archaeological excavation and the archaeologists show you their newest runic find. A piece of bone with ‘l’ and some tiny marks. Every single rune counts. #runology
