#5SecondReview: Rental Family

The feel-good flick of the year. An American actor (Fraser) working in Japan takes on a job that has him play roles in the real lives of clients. The characters are authentic in their flaws and the film is kind in its soft but clear criticisms of people and customs.

#5SecondReview: Heavy Metal

This exploitative, music-fueled, Canadian-made (Candy! Reitman! Levy!) sci-fi fantasy was the epitome of forbidden fruit for me as a kid. So of course I watched it on Superchannel when my folks weren’t home. This rewatch with my film school kid cast it in a new light.

#5SecondReview: King Sorrow

Hill’s best? Maybe. It also reads very much like one of his dad’s books. In a good way. It’s an epic modern fairy tale with beautifully constructed characters, heartbreaking twists, and a torment-loving dragon who’s bound to go down as an archetype of the species.

#5SecondReview: Eddington

Blood Simple, Three Billboards, Frailty, No Country, A Simple Plan, Hell or Highwater, and now Eddington. Ari Aster puts his signature on Southern noir with this take-COVID-era-conspiracies-to-their-logical-conclusions thriller, starring Phoenix in one of his best roles.

#5SecondReview: Machines Like Me

This one has some interesting thoughts on where we might be in 10 or 20 years with AI-driven robots (even though it’s set in an alternate history version of the 1980s). Machine intelligence, ethics, consciousness, determinism, and identity. Good stuff.

5SecondReview: The Running Man (2025)

I mean, a hand-knit sock plays a key role, so of course I was bound to like this dystopian romp about a deadly reality TV show. Much better than the adaptation starring the governator. Cera and Coleman steal all their scenes. Wright’s record remains flawless.

#5SecondReview: Frankenstein (2025)

Del Toro has put his stamp on this classic. Production design, makeup, hair, costumes—all award-worthy. I see a nod for adapted screenplay, too. Elordi and Isaac are very good, but Goth lacks presence. And Desplat’s score is a bit too whimsical/Elfman-ish.

Made a sourdough crust pizza with cremini mushrooms, brie-infused salami, red onions, arugula, caramelized red onions, and a balsamic drizzle. 😋

🧶Knitting update!🧶

Finished my first knee-high sock!🧦

If you’ve ever fretted over having stubby legs, just knit one of these. They go on *forever.* more than 300 rows. One sock used an entire 100g skein. Made me feel like I must have Rockette-length gams!

Fits like a glove, though! ☺️

#5SecondReview: The Diplomat (S3)

I like this show so much. The entire cast is fantastic (especially Russell), and the political machinations feel super authentic. And each season's cliffhanger keeps me thinking about the show until the next season! Full marks. More like this, please, Netflix.

#5SecondReview: Foundation (S3)

Every season takes big leaps of faith in time, characters, and plot, pushing what audiences are willing to accept, and season three is no different. Some major changes, but they make sense given how much has changed in science and society since Asimov’s books.

#5SecondReview: Predator: Badlands

A predator learns the power of friendship from an adorable bifurcated android. It’s a silly romp that raises more questions about the connection between the Predator and Alien universes (and who owns their IP rights), but it made for a fun Friday night actioner!

The box shrub stone planter I built a couple of summers back suffered an attempted murder by a careless driver last night. So I got to play Adult Lego today!

#5SecondReview: Slow Horses (S5)

My sole beef with this show is that it lasts but a day or two. I adore all the characters (except Roddy Ho, who I find myself wishing might die every episode). I continue to have a huge crush on Kristen Scott Thomas. And Gary Oldman is just…gold, man.

I have combined two of my passions--knitting and RPGs--to create...YarnQuest!

My character, a Level 1 Knitter (subclass: Lace Weaver), is below. I hope to grow my skills, abilities, attributes, equipment, and fibre crafting MAGIC over the years to come. ☺️

#5SecondReview: Garden State

I know this is a millennial existential crisis classic, but hear me out: Braff is so sensitive and sweet and full of self doubt that I think he’s actually got Gen Z vibes.

Maybe he’s due for a comeback with the coming of age of a generation that really gets him.

#5SecondReview: A House of Dynamite

Explores the 20 minutes leading up to a long-distance nuclear strike on the US, as seen from three sets of perspectives. Not Bigelow’s best (I’m a huge fan of hers), but still very tense and watchable. With a bold ending. Good ensemble cast, too.

It’s weird how movies featuring a president who isn’t off his rocker now feel dated/unrealistic.

Stone + Plemmons + Lanthimos = magic

No spoilers. Exactly what you’d expect and hope to experience from these three. One of my favourites of the year.

#5SecondReview: Doctor Sleep

One of the best sequels ever made. Respectful of what came before, but full of bold new ideas that build the universe. Terrifying in spots—like the baseball boy’s murder—but also weirdly heartwarming. Flanagan is a perfect fit for King. Here’s hoping we get more.

Wifey put the kibosh on my original costume idea, so this is the fallback I dug up from my tickle trunk (aka my closet). I call it “Me, if I were adjacent to English nobility. And had horses. And liked to hunt. Using bloodhounds.”

Here’s how I made the pasta e fagioli I posted pictures of last week. A tad less soupy than I imagined it would be, but still very yum.

Any real chefs or Italians out there who want to critique it, please do! I’ve got a thick skin and no illusions that I’m a pro.🙂
