This cutie is a southern shovel-nosed snake (Brachyurophis semifasciatus), another snake species we caught during a pitfall trapping survey at AWC's Paruna Sanctuary last week. Apparently, they feed primarily on the eggs of other reptiles 🥚.

Brushtail possums have not lived in this part of Australia for almost 100 years, but now they are back
Locally extinct from Western Australia's northern Wheatbelt for almost a century, a brushtail possum has been photographed out and about, signalling a landscape-scale conservation success.

The Gunduwa region is in the transitional zone between the Southwest Australia Biodiversity Hotspot and the more semi-arid interior of the continent. But it's a hotspot in itself, within the centre of endemism for acacias, and home for a plethora of rare & endangered species.

A recent wildflower trip to the agricultural region near home turned up these stunning feather flowers (Verticordia). Usually flowering en masse in spring, there are over 100 species with all but 2 found in south-western Western Australia.

We had our first decent dump of rain in a while at Mt Gibson last night, which means the frogs are back out and about in abundance.
At this time of year, the chorus seems to be dominated by the Shoemaker's Frog (Neobatrachus sutor; left) and the Wheatbelt Frog (N. kunapalari; right).

ICYMI: Last Friday we conducted the final planned release of Chuditch (AKA Western Quolls) at AWC'S Mt Gibson Wildlife Sanctuary as part of our reintroduction. We now begin the hard work of tracking some of them as they settle in their new homes.
