Small but mighty. Am a doctor. Have worked in Antarctica.
We saw an actual platypus in the wild today!
It was amazing. Spent an hour watching the platypus surface and dive.

(Thank you to @jackdashby.bsky.social for the tip on where to see them)

An #Otwituary for #Apollo13 astronaut #JimLovell

Once when I was a child
I looked up at the night sky
to find no moon shining.
Instead, the face of a man,
learning his gravest task
was not glory, but surviving.

What glacial villainy,
deep in the bluest eye.
What thrift of movement,
expression. What want
of love that cannot finesse
a smile. What stagecraft
that might save you,
or break you in two.

An #Otwituary for musical satirist of the 50s-60s #TomLehrer

There’s comedy and parody and levity and melody,
Alacrity, sagacity and mockery and repartee,
There’s plenty of absurdists and they come at ten-a-penny.
There may be one as sharp as him but I can’t think of any.

As well as being the 80th anniversary of VE Day, Sir David Attenborough’s 99th birthday and the day we got a new Pope, it’s 45 years since the world was declared free of smallpox, which is a Very Good Thing.

Auschwitz was at the end of a long process. It did not start from gas chambers.

This hatred was gradually developed by humans. From ideas, words, stereotypes & prejudice through legal exclusion, dehumanization & escalating violence... to systematic and industrial murder.

Auschwitz took time.

Eighty years ago today, over 7,000 prisoners of the German Nazi camp #Auschwitz, including some 700 children, were liberated by the soldiers of the Soviet Army.

1,689 days of murder, pain, suffering, and humiliation were over.
Today, we all remember. We must keep remembering.
