Life is booming in the New York Bight. Our WCS Ocean Giants team saw fin whales, humpbacks, and common dolphins all feeding together.

At the surface, two different pectoral fins emerged, a side-lunging fin whale and a fin-slapping humpback. A feeding frenzy on a fave prey type. 🌎

Witnessing this pair made for an amazing day on the water back in June!
Last week our WCS Ocean Giants team had its first sighting of a #finwhale mother & calf in the New York Bight since 2018.

We’ve been acoustically monitoring this species for nearly a decade, revealing song pattern trends and providing insight into its seasonal presence.

For 10 years, WCS Ocean Giants has studied whales in the New York Bight. Our team gathers data that is used to better protect these animals. These shots are from a recent ‘close approach’ by a curious humpback that circled and remained close to the boat for quite some time. #WorldWhaleDay 🌎

We uncovered the same statistical structure that is a hallmark of human language in whale song, published today in Science. @inbalarnon.bsky.social @simonkirby.bsky.social @jennyallen13.bsky.social @clairenea.bsky.social @emma-carroll.bsky.social

Our WCS / @whoi.edu acoustic monitoring buoys picked up Critically Endangered North Atlantic right whales in NY Bight yesterday. This triggers slow zones, crucial to protect the whales. bit.ly/4aQNo7v

Last week in this area, @noaa.gov saw a mother (Accordion, #4150) with her 1st calf. ⬇️ 🌎

This winter, our WCS Ocean Giants team retrieved and redeployed 6 acoustic monitoring instruments for a two-year project, supported by @nyserda.bsky.social.

The data helps create baseline info on marine mammal species and ocean noise in offshore wind lease areas, guiding best practices.
