Polio survivor Pat Crago, who contracted the disease at age 5, shares his story and concern over declining childhood vaccination rates. He and his wife urge parents and grandparents to share lived experiences to stress the importance of protecting children from vaccine-preventable diseases.

Here is the advice I’d give you as a grandparent:

We love you and our grandkids so much. That’s why we’re saying these things. We know what these childhood diseases look like and feel like.
We saw our brothers, sisters, cousins and classmates suffer.

Grandparents lived in a time when measles and polio were common and terrifying. We were grateful vaccines kept our children safe so they didn't have to suffer as many did. Now, we are speaking up to ensure they understand these diseases have serious consequences.
