I get distracted by shiny things.
Genuine question: can Olympic speed-skaters go as fast in a clockwise direction as they do anti-clockwise? Are they Zoolander-esque non-ambi-turners?

That advert in the middle of the rugby on ITV was an abomination. Utterly unnecessary. And to have the sound switch away from the commentary too? Shocking

I’ve watched Jurassic Park with my kids over the last couple of evenings, and my daughter said afterwards that the T-Rex is basically the hero of the film because he saved four people at the end. What about the people it killed and injured earlier, I asked. Four is more than one, she said.

I love how this interview with Chuck Klosterman sums up so succinctly why it is that I love sport so much: the fact that you simply don't know what's going to happen.

I don’t understand why, if a sitting MP defects to another party, a by-election isn’t immediately called. It’s mocking the thousands of people who voted for that MP because of their party rather than them as an individual.

4-3-3 today? Exciting to see Nkeng start. He was absolutely electric as a sub against Wycombe the other week.

@metoffice.gov.uk Can you talk me through the design decision to have this enormous space at the top of the new app’s forecast page, forcing us to scroll down for most of the information?

Amazing.

The Predictions League is back for 2026! Here are my entries. Numbers 14 and 15 are the more outlandish predictions which are worth double points.

Dench and Versace are making their fifth appearance in my list. The last death I correctly predicted was Jimmy Carter, and that came on Dec 29th 2024...

Is it just the AFC Wimbledon game that is having problems on Sky Sports +?

A little surprising that the predictions here consistently go for low-scoring games.

Of the last 40 matches, Kay has only predicted a team to score 3 goals once. The young boy has done the same, and the algorithm only twice. Interestingly, the 4 random readers have predicted 3+ goals 8 times.

I'm reading a book about the AIDS crisis in the 80s, mostly centred around NYC and the activists/scientists there. It's an emotional and inspiring read, with death seemingly on every page, but far too often the 'Everyone Has AIDS' song from Team America pops into my head. It's very off-putting...

This is frankly a terrifying read. How does someone so batshit have so much influence at the top of US politics, and how do we not know who is funding her?

Right, let's fiddle with the qualification process to attract more viewers, rather than tackle the fundamental issue of the expanded tournament size that basically no fans ever asked for.

The same lack of jeopardy pretty much applies to tournament group stages too: see Euro24.

I wonder if the current dip to a 12-month low for UK 5-year gilts will get as much media coverage as the brief spike above 4.5% did at the start of this year.

I love articles like this; not because I necessarily fully understand them, but because of the way somebody has a spark of genius that brings together two different strands of mathematics/physics in order to show something new

@andrewsparrowgdn.bsky.social re: Farage frequency at PMQs. Interesting that Bertram's article omits data to make his point. He says Green MPs have asked 9 Qs, and Farage 6, and that this is unfair. But doesn't mention the 4 Qs from other Reform MPs in the same period, for an overall "score" of 10-9

Nowadays I pretty much exclusively read books from my local libraries, so I treat them as if they are a sacred object and am incredibly gentle with them. And then I glance at my own bookshelves and see some of my favourites that look like they've been attacked by a rabid racoon.
The veneration of Books As Objects misses the point entirely. If you're reading a book, turn the corners down, break the spine, spill soup on it. It's your book, go nuts. A pristine, unread book is a tragedy in a way that a beloved, much-read book that looks like the dog's been at it could never be.
Tell me your most unhinged literary opinion, as a little treat

Massive news, this. Jackson's done an excellent job at Wimbledon so far.
AFC Wimbledon are delighted to announce that manager Johnnie Jackson, assistant manager Terry Skiverton and first-team coach Dave Reddington have all extended their contracts through until the end of the 2026/27 season ✍️
