View outside my "office". Poor critter has cutaneous fibromas, and the DNR says that it's not an issue for us or the dog. It doesn't appear to have improved in the few weeks it's been hanging around.

Without a dog in this fight, I must notice that Seattle has a far larger Randonneuring community than does Boston.

Got the new work laptop. They allow you to change the lock screen image, but require the corporate background image.

What sort of corporate brainwashing is this?

Through some miracle of modern computing, my work Win11 laptop got itself into a bitlocker/BSOD sequence.

The nice man at the IT desk will wipe it and re-image it, and has presented me a loaner. It's effectively a glorified tablet, but at least I have my email and a browser.

BSODs still exist.

January looks to have been a rough one for my little Rando club. It looks like we closed out one of our club's 4 R-12 streaks and one of our 4 P-12 streaks.

These are 12 straight months of at least one RUSA approved 100k-200k (P-12) or 200k+ (R-12) rides.

But, we got 2 new P-12s and 1 new R-12!

One of my friends and cycling mentors recently moved up to Minnesota and acted as a marshall for today's festivities. It seems to have taken him all of a month to fully acclimate to the local climate and help out. Thanks, Bill!

Some more cool pictures from the 200k. Slightly off route was this gem of a bridge in Winamac, IN.

Perhaps not my smartest idea. January 200k or bust!
January 22, 2026 at 3:55 PM
All ready for my January 200k.

Except for the weather part, that is.

Between the holidays, a couple of rounds of bad colds, and sneaking in my P- and R- monthly rides, I hadn't had a threshold intensity workout in over a month. So I had one today. 75 minutes, 3x9 over-unders.

Ouch.

My January 100k ride (P-27). A bit windy, but lots of fun.

The local newspaper discusses our annual Jan 1 Polar Bear Ride showing me leading a small pack.
Local club still going strong after 40 years
Lisa Hemmeger laughed when she recalled a New Year’s Day a few years ago, one she described as “miserably cold.”

I've been working (along with the former RBA) on a new 200k route to temporarily replace Indiana's iconic 200k. (Until Indy improves bike routes from downtown heading south).

It looks like we're both of the opinion that we'd be better off moving our rides to start in Bloomington, IN.

Reminder: I am not to be left unsupervised in the presence of snickerdoodles.

I completed the 18 miler today on the Polar Bear Ride. I borrowed my kid's bike, so I was slightly out of sorts, but the ice buildup is pretty significant.

Starting line for the 2026 Polar Bear Ride. 18F and outside of the park roads are iced over.

For a community without gravel or MTB riders, this may be awkward.

The club's annual Polar Bear Ride is tomorrow. (I think it's the 56th edition). We're expecting temps around 20F and light (<10mph) winds, but dustings of snow are covering up all my carefully painted Dan Henrys.

Don't care. Gonna ride anyway. I'm pretty sure I know the way.

Rode inside on Zwift tonight to help a nearby Rando friend knock out his one-shot Festive 500.

I rediscovered psychobilly. It really helps me push the pedals indoors.

Riding my first Ohio Fleche when my Shimano crank decided to finally fail on me. Some quick assistance from my team and a roadside "repair" was enough to get me the 150 miles remaining.

The cold, rain, and our leader getting knocked down by a baby possum and getting a few bruises seemed minor.

I've decided that I really like Bar Mitts this time of year. They kept me in my thin gloves for my long ride, and it still got uncomfortably warm in there at times.

I got my first field "flat" since going tubeless on yesterday's ride.

Picked up a piece of flint or tooth or something and my riding buddy noted the fresh sealant all over my fender.

As it didn't bother my ride, I rode the 10 miles to the pizza stop before I checked it. Tire was a bit squishy.

It was a surprisingly good day for local Randos. 3 of us Hoosiers knocked out 200k perms today, keeping our monthly streaks alive.

Our good friends from Chicago resumed their holiday tradition of knocking out the festive 500 in a single event. This year from Chicago to Louisville.

And December's 200k is complete. Along the Cardinal Greenway, starting in Marion going through Jonesboro, Gaston, Muncie, Losantville and turning around in Willamsburg. Mostly flat but with a fair amount of undulating rail trail that was just enough to be annoying.
Mid Ride pizza break - 43 F and we now have tailwinds.

This will be our December 200k.
