Most importantly, the call to reform Democratic leadership appropriately elevates the country's interests over the party’s interests. We need effective leadership in the Democratic Party not because we want the party to succeed but because we want democracy to succeed.

Calling for the Democratic Party to reconfigure its leadership so the party can effectively oppose a dictator is not disloyal and is not destructive of party unity. Rather, it seeks to align party leadership with the strongly held views of the vast majority of the Democratic base.

Democrats need to identify leaders who recognize the urgency and reality of the ongoing coup and who have the courage and communication skills to lead Democrats in meaningful opposition.
