📝 NEW WORK OUT

1/ Excited to share our article "The Transgressive Aesthetics of Populism" (w/ @bolandeira.bsky.social) in @journalpolitics.bsky.social. We explore how populism disrupts the rules of visibility in politics, connecting aesthetics, queer theory & democracy 🧵

This article consolidates the emerging discursive-performative paradigm in populist studies by presenting the idea of populism as an aesthetic transgression, br...

And, by the way, can we please stop calling nazi-saluting people #populist? What else do they need to do for the media & various pundits to stop euphemising & legitimising them like that? Tatoo a swastika on their foreheads? Or would that still be discussed as "controversial" & "weird"?

This is incredibly worrying & dangerous. Looks like a clear indication of how large social media platforms are now actively becoming a part of an #authoritarian shift in US politics & beyond.
Also for the international crowd: #Instagram censors “Democrat” as a search term, while allowing “Republican” and seems to prioritize anti-leftwing content in search queries for alternative search terms. #DSA

Some of us have been talking for years about the dangers of euphemising the #FarRight. Now we find ourselves in front of numerous media, people & organisations who are looking at an outright #Nazi salute & (pretend to) fail to realise it, calling it "controversial" or "awkward". Dark times indeed.

#Academic hive, I'm compiling a reading list of articles/chapters on comparing the British & French political systems, covering stuff from history & institutional structure, to discourse & ideologies, political parties & electoral politics. Please suggest works that I could include. Thanks!

Is it just me, or is the academic bunch over-represented here? Not bad, but I guess this makes the development of very specific/limited echo chambers an increased risk for the platform; widening the gap between scholars & the broader public & furthering problems already present in X/Twitter...

I'm getting the sense that there is a lot of incoming traffic here but little interaction, which is not a great indication of where the platform is going. I hope it picks up and the place starts to feel "more alive" soon.

Testing the #academic environment here: I'm looking for suggestions of articles with well-developed #methods sections suitable for dissecting/discussing with politics students. Indicative topics: #nationalism, #authoritarianism, #populism, #Far_Right, social #movements, party #leadership, #policy.

Our forthcoming Edward Elgar "Research Handbook on #Populism" got its fourth & final endorsement from the kind & generous Levente Littvay, which makes me hopeful that we'll be getting a book cover soon.
Another 3 months until we see this bad boy published! www.e-elgar.com/shop/gbp/res...

The #Guardian is at it again... euphemizing #PiS as merely 'populist' while the main problems with the party have always been its authoritarianism, its untra-conservativism, its nationalism & xenophobia, its intolerance, all much more important & relevant than 'populism'. #polisky

After a summer of unimaginable destruction due to #wildfires & extreme #flooding, Greek PM Mitsotakis is seriously suggesting that "Climate change is an opportunity to extend the tourist season".
The planet might soon become uninhabitable, but some people still only think about profit.
Greece’s Mitsotakis Says Tourism Can Benefit From Climate Shift
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said his country can benefit from a changing climate because it will help to attract visitors outside of the traditional summer months.

Great to see so many nice people/colleagues have already moved here from that other unnamable platform. This is just to say hi & ask for any useful beginner tips. For example, what's up with those feeds? Can we somehow get included in the polsci one(s)? Thanks.
