If you have teenage boys this should surprise no one. It’s our fault for giving them phones so young and teaching them to have the attention span of a fly. It’s terrifying what we have done.

This is exactly right. Trump’s big advantage is that he’s playing tic-tac-toe without a pencil but somehow convinces people he’s multiverse time-travel chess.
There’s a narrative that Gaetz was a deliberate head-fake — a distraction to boost the real candidate — but I am always suspicious of narratives that attribute four-dimensional chess to trump as opposed to knocking over the table and eating the checkers.
