It's Performance Review time.

I mean Performance Interpretation Day. Cause we all know it's not a review.

Anytime I read something about AI, I imagine the LetterKenny crew pronouncing "AI" like they do "LA".

Hot take: if you think you're pair programming with ai, you don't understand what the goal of pairing actually is.

When is a company going to give people more time off due to increased productivity (due to ai or anything else) instead of letting people go? Oh wait, that doesn’t fit the capitalism narrative.

Today, I had a 20-something yr old tell me I needed to switch to RubyMine because it has a button to do something I did on the command line. And just like that I dropped my 25+ yrs worth of muscle memory in favor of a slow bloated editor that gives me nothing new... except a new gui button to push.

I've been forced to work on a long lived branch. Two weeks long, 64 files changed, only 22 commits, and tests added last.

At least we paired on it, I guess, even though I couldn't convince any of my pairs to actually write tests first, or commit in small safe changes.

I do not subscribe to the stack ranking approaches to "performance management". I've seen too many "high performers" *causing* others to be "bad performers". I was that person at one time. There is more to writing software than writing code and PRs with high velocity. More people need to see this.

I see another big PR conflict coming up, but the other dev doesn't want to worry about it yet.

So it's a race. A competition, not cooperation.

This is not good teamwork. How is this type of teamwork okay??

In a potential CLM, I reject all forms of 996 and similar expectations.

god i hate branches. I did a bunch of work, on a branch from a branch from a branch (which is a completely stupid way to work, but "that's what we do here"), and then come to find out someone else did the same work on yet a different ticket/branch (why is this work in 2 tickets??) ...

Is it possible to feel sorry for a fly?
My cat just caught one and chewed on it but didn’t eat it
I felt bad so I threw it in the toilet and flushed it
But he didn’t go down. He floated back up to the top
But the sound of running water made me have to pee
So then I peed on him and flushed him again

One of the most obnoxious things about weak work cultures is when you ask "how can we improve X?" and the response is "Person A is to blame". I don't care who you want to blame. I don't want to blame. That creates an "us vs them" world. I do not want that. I want to fix X. That's it.

netflix's new godawful ui is enough reason to cancel.

A common complaint about pairing is that it's exhausting. I find it much easier to pair all day than to solo all day, investigate every little thing when it could be figured out in 5 seconds by asking, the back and forth of the inevitable PR after all the work has been done (leading to rework)...

I've been solo playing Vantage by @stonemaiergames.com and I can't stop playing it. I love the exploration and learning about the world. After 6 solo plays, I can't recommend it enough!

Is it reasonable to have a midlife crisis because your two closest friends are having midlife crises and, well, times are a-changing?

I've been working with rails since 2005.

I do not care about writing code in a "more railsy way".

I would pay good money for a boardgame with Tunic-level of puzzles.
July 24, 2025 at 12:15 PM
I don't get wrapped up in a video game very often, but Tunic is a masterpiece.

going from a trunk based dev flow to a branch heavy one, the thing i perhaps miss most is not dealing with all this migration back and forth, switching branching, db out of sync, etc. This just isn't an issue (that I've experienced) in a TBD flow.

I'm a big fan of pair programming. That said, I bet a lot of people would argue with that. I don't mind switching drivers 1-3 times a day. I don't like switching after every test, or after 10 minutes, or even once an hour. I'm not tied to being "the one" who's writing the code. I simply don't care.
July 15, 2025 at 6:30 PM
People who aren't in the code..
talking about implementation details..
for work planned 6+ months from now..
and of course asking "how many points is that?"

...

How's your day going?

I've never once cared when the end of the sprint is.
