On June 6, 1944, Allied troops launched a military operation code named Operation Overlord. On that day, US, British, and Canadian troops crossed the English Channel and landed on the beaches of Normandy, France.

From May 15 to July 9, 1944, Hungarian gendarmerie officials, under the guidance of German SS officials, deported around 440,000 Jews from Hungary. Most were deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau, where, upon arrival and after selection, SS functionaries killed the majority of them in gas chambers.

The 'green ticket roundup' was a mass arrest started a day after police delivered a green card to 6,694 foreign Jews living in Paris, telling them to report for a "status check".

Today, we remember VE Day — May 8, 1945. A day that marked the end of WWII and the beginning of peace.

We honour the courage of those who served and the lives lost in the fight for freedom.

An American-Japanese battalion liberated a group of over 5,000 prisoners who had been led on a death march from the infamous Dachau concentration camp. The unit also helped liberate Dachau's sub-camps in the following weeks.

Before the war, the Hungarian Jewish population was around 825,000. In just 8 weeks following the first transports to Auschwitz, some 424,000 had been deported to camps. By the end of the war, 565,000 Hungarian Jewish people had been murdered, over half of Hungary's entire Jewish population.

The purpose-built death camp began its Nazi programme of extermination as the third camp of Operation Reinhard.

The camp's operations claimed the lives of over 167,000 people. It was an unfortunate example of Operation Reinhard's totality. A pine forest now grows where the camp once stood.

ON THIS DAY: Dachau concentration camp was liberated after the remaining SS soldiers stood down & relinquished control.

Over 188,000 prisoners had been detained at the camp during its operation, & only 67,665 remained.

ON THIS DAY: A group of more than 7,000 Jewish prisoners, including Istvan Wirth (father to David Wirth), were led south out of Dachau concentration camp by SS troops in an effort to prevent their liberation. Thousands more were led in various directions from Dachau's sub-camps.

The Gestapo was a notorious force, encouraging neighbours to turn on each other. They were granted ruthless powers, which allowed them to actively terrorise, persecute & destroy the 'enemies of the state'. As a result they were feared by all Germans, not only persecuted minorities.

ON THIS DAY: 55,000 inmates were liberated from Bergen-Belsen by the British Army.

ON THIS DAY: Buchenwald concentration camp was evacuated.
Packed cattle cars, & death marches through the frost-bitten German landscape without food and water, resulted in the deaths of over 10,000 inmates - a quarter of all the people in Buchenwald's main camp.

After intense forced labour at Schlieben Camp, Germany, Sam Gardener was transported with prisoners to Mauthausen concentration camp.
His transport was loaded with over 2,000 people. He would be one of just 42 people to survive the journey.
