I like Ilbert as a character.
He's closer to Luthen from Andor than some might want to admit. From our perspective, he's an asshole who betrayed our trust. But he saw an opportunity and took it, and given the result, it may have been the only way.

This is only a small example of how Stormblood is one of the few games that *actually* examines colonial trauma and shows *why and how* an Empire is evil. Other media rarely ever stretches beyond depicting an imperialism as cartoon villainy.
I think one of the smartest narrative/creative touches in FFXIV Stormblood is: you’re introduced to the Garlean imperial anthem in an early cutscene, and you find out later that it’s a stolen, rewritten song of national pride and worker’s brotherhood from a country they’re fucking occupying.
