I was just about done listening to music after the shower but I heard a song I never heard before starting with the sound of wind blowing on a quiet mountain top and I said out loud "wait this probably goes hard" and it did I'm glad I left it on for one more song.

I used to be so scared of Tomb Raider when I would watch my sister play. But I couldn't look away. Is this the power of the PlayStation? It's honestly a pretty crusty classic. But I feel a sense of satisfaction reaching the end on my own this time.
:) I always loved the way Tomb Raider looked on PS1. I can picture so many of the sights and sounds from that game with my eyes closed. In this remaster I was constantly pressing the button to toggle between the new and old graphics and compare everything. I was often happy with the result. I don't think anything stood out to me as a downgrade or too far off from my imagination. There are some areas where I can see an argument for the new graphics changing the feel too much. For example some bigger and more open areas seem really dark and scary on the PS1 because of the shorter draw distance. But when you turn on the new graphics it's easier to see what's coming up. The new graphics try to go for more realistic lighting. I noticed in some rooms they added holes on the ceilings only in the new graphics so that it actually looks like there's a light source. The new "modern" controls honestly don't do much to help this feel any less dated. The platforming often asks for precision and harshly sends you back to your last save if you make a minor mistake. So you end up constantly opening up the menu to save since you can save anywhere. I think this remaster probably should've added an auto save that would basically act as a checkpoint. But this isn't really an issue if you just remember to save. The remastered trilogy also features a photo mode and I always love a photo mode. It works with both the new and old graphics. It feels really cool to be able to move the camera around so freely in these PS1 environments that felt so mysterious to me. It's like flying a drone around your old childhood haunts.

It took me forever to finish this game because I kinda sucked at it for a long time.
Hades is as close to perfect as a game can be. The action is fast-paced, difficult, and satisfying to overcome. The storytelling is expertly woven into the gameplay loop and slowly revealed to you in a way only a video game can. Dying and starting over is something that's been a part of video games since forever. Back to the last save or checkpoint. But in Hades, each of your deaths really happens to Zagreus. Whenever you're sent back down to the bottom of the underworld, people ask how you died. Sometimes they'll fill you in on what they've been doing while you've been trying to escape. Sometimes they'll encourage you to keep going or tease you for another failure. Everyone has so much to say it's impressive how long you can play this game without hearing something repeated. Sometimes it feels like Zagreus is reading my mind and saying just what I was gonna say. One time I interacted with a store, looked at the items, and the thing I wanted the most was the only thing I couldn't afford. Before I even moved or clicked anything on the menu to give an indication of what I wanted, Zag said something like "ah, I can't afford it" as if he was hoping for exactly what I was. This kinda thing happens constantly. And his voice acting sounds flawless on top of that. The best video game stories aren't just the ones that look like movies. Some of the best ones really make use of the fact that a game story can be interactive. A movie or TV series of Hades wouldn't hit the same as a game you had to fight tooth and nail through with each of your own attempts telling more of the tale.

Are you the kind of person that can put up with a game that seems super youcore but also kinda sucks to play? I definitely am because I just finished Koudelka. It's about 12 hours long and a lot of that time was listening to music I didn't like. But I still feel like I enjoyed the experience.
In the first hour or two of playing Koudelka, you might wonder how a game like this didn't get popular. Walking around Nemeton Monastery is enjoyable enough. You get the satisfaction of putting the key item where it goes and opening a door. And wow it's got cool turn based combat with guns! It kinda brings to mind another series that made it's debut on PS1 with Resi style exploration and RPG combat. But the turn based battle system here isn't nearly as solid as that. Battles in Koudelka should come to you pretty naturally if you ever played another game where you fought on a grid. You just move your character into position and attack or cast a spell. Seems like some simple fun right? It's just agonizingly slow. It is sooooooooooooo sloooooooooooooooooooow. That is earnestly the biggest issue with an otherwise great game. There's so much time wasted in battle. The music started to become really annoying to me too. But it was still worth it to me. The voice acting and FMVs are some of the best you're going to find on the PS1. The party dynamic is so interesting. The way they butt heads feels natural. They often disagree and raise their voices with one another. They also aren't above teasing each other and being snarky. I like that everyone's got layers to them. The backgrounds and character models all look very cool too. Just have your fast forward button on DuckStation at the ready.
