You think ordinary people aren't smart enough to govern?

We trust juries with life and death decisions. We just don't trust them with policy.

That says more about our aristocratic bias than their actual competence.

#ICYMI - This week, Hélène Landemore helps us discover how replacing elected politicians with randomly selected citizens - not better elections, but actual people governing - is what democracy actually means.

Elections select people already attracted to power. People who make politics a profession. People prone to corruption.

Random selection does the opposite. It picks the nurse, the Uber driver, the student who'd never run for office.

That's why it works better.

Democracy shouldn't be a spectator sport where you vote and hope politicians deliver. Real democracy means you SERVE. A few months, paid, transformative. Then someone else serves. We rotate power instead of concentrating it. That's what "by the people" means: www.futurehindsight.com/episodes/dem...

Elections were never designed to give you power. Your 18th century founders wanted an "aristocracy" whose "elevated minds" would filter what ordinary people think. That's why elected politicians serve the richest 10%, not every day people. 🧵(1/3)

TOMORROW: What if elections aren't what democracy is about?

Join us with Hélène Landemore to learn how random selection gives us actual people's power – and why ancient Greeks rejected elections as too aristocratic.

Research on stopping authoritarians is clear.

You can win by acting together. Boycott companies. March against fascism. Refuse to bow to fear. Pressure the pillars of support.

You have more power than you think.

One thing is clear – institutions are not going to save us.

In fact, if you trust courts and elections alone, you’ll lose 93% of the time. But with organized civil resistance, you actually have a shot at winning.

Serbian police were ordered to shoot protesters. They refused.

Instead they said: "Come on in, everyone. We're getting Milosevic out."

That's how the dictator fell. Not through courts or elections. Through organized pressure that got his enforcers to switch sides.
