“From Commission staffers “depressed” to see years of work being speedily undone, to Cabinet officials straining for influence under von der Leyen’s centralized working style, the speed and top-down nature of the new deregulation drive has transparency alarm bells ringing in Brussels.” 🤦🏽
Ursula von der Leyen has begun her second term as European Commission president with a lightning-fast deregulation drive — and almost no one in Brussels knew about it until it was already happening.
How von der Leyen blindsided Brussels with her deregulation drive
The Commission president is pushing a sweeping, rapid and centralized agenda to “simplify” EU rules — and not everyone in Brussels is thrilled.

🌏CEO's @kennethhaar.bsky.social & Hans van Scharen op-ed sounding the alarm re the Commission's latest attack on NGOs to prevent EU funds being used for "advocacy".

💰Leaving the space clear for corporate lobbyists – who already vastly outnumber and outspend public interest groups in EU lobbying.
Defunding NGOs that lobby the EU will be profoundly undemocratic
The EU Commission’s new policy guidelines state EU money can no longer be used for civil society’s advocacy work. It’s clear this could have a huge impact, not just for so-called ‘green NGOs’, but for...

A commentary I wrote about climate advocacy under the second Von der Leyen Commission. Even more relevant with recent news about the restriction on lobbying activities by EU-funded NGOs.

A sad decision for green NGOs: The European Commission is restricting €5.4 billion in LIFE funds for lobbying activities. This echoes anti-green positions pushed by VDL’s center-right EPP, limiting the influence of environmental groups on EU policy.👇 www.politico.eu/article/euro...

While NGOs claim that the decision to lower the protection of wolves is unlawful and led the EU Ombudsman to open an investigation, experts have been called to oppose the proposal by 30 November.
