I haven't had home internet for more than two days and I have no confidence it will be restored soon. The infrastructure/ultimate service provider must contact my building management to request access to units below mine. But they don't seem to grasp they have to take this first step, and ask. 😩

I hosted a Heated Rivalry discussion (on Zoom) and it was so much fun. PhD types were there, incl some clients, friends/colleagues, and folks from my email list and network more broadly. We talked for nearly 2.5 hours 😂 I loved it 😭

You can’t outsource this part

Dear Reader, “Can’t you just tell me what job would make sense for me?” It's rare that someone asks me that directly, but it's often implied in emails and messages I get from PhDs. And I totally get why someone would think I can do that, and why they'd want me to. You…

Dear Reader, “Can’t you just tell me what job would make sense for me?” It's rare that someone asks me that directly, but it's often implied in emails and messages I get from PhDs. And I totally get why someone would think I can do that, and why they'd want me to. You want the right answer. You want the expert to point and say, “That one. Do that.” (Me too, bro.) A pattern in my own life is wanting to find The Answer to my career. And I keep relearning the same lesson: Clarity that comes from...

My internet's been down for an hour. Makes working almost impossible! I do have phone data but this isn't ideal. Complain.

Watching curling, as Canadians do during the Olympics, and it's a neat sport. Swedish team is made up of siblings; the Canadians are a husband and wife team.

Why resume advice often misses the point
Dear Reader, Something interesting happened in the small-group discussion with my program members this week. About seven people attended the small group discussion I hosted for program members, and the first question was about skills-based resumes: What did we think about them? Has anyone used them? Any advice? This is a less common resume format, sometimes recommended for career changers or very early career folks. I don’t love it, generally, not least because most readers expect different....

No joke: I got angry hate mail today for writing an obituary of a Black woman scientist—because the person felt she did didn’t deserve the recognition.

Which just makes me want to share it again: www.nature.com/articles/d41...

She made key contributions to US cold-war science despite facing huge barriers as a Black woman.
