Now is a good time to check your nearby ponds with a torch at night (where it is safe to do so). It is amazing how much life there is in our ponds, even at this time of year

Our #WildTimes groups in south London have been making and hanging home-made bird feeders 🐦🌱

Part of our job on Hampton Nature Reserve is to make sure our volunteers can get around safely.

Our Reserve team cut these, & a few other steps, into a slippery clay bank to enable easy, safe access to a productive nursery area of the reserve.

This  allows us to keep monitoring this area.

Our #LondonBlueChain team braved icy temps to return to conservation work at Lesnes Abbey Woods.

Cutting back dense holly lets sunlight reach the woodland floor, helping bluebells and saplings grow and supporting wildlife diversity.

We welcomed a team from Addison Lee to Hampton Nature Reserve to help us get ready for newt emergence in spring.

A lovely, hard-working group that were a lot of fun as we got 1 of our reptile survey transects ready for April.

A big thank you for coming along & supporting your local green space.

Our #LondonBlueChain team worked on a small garden pond restoration in Southwark.

The pond liner had a leak, so the team removed it & put in a new one.

The pond was also levelled & the silt and water that was already there was added carefully back in, as there were frogs brumating in it.

A very wet volunteer celebration at Hampton Nature Reserve just before Christmas.

The most eagerly anticipated jacket potatoes as the fire kept going out! We commiserated ourselves with toasted marshmallows.

A massive thank you to all volunteers at Hampton Nature Reserve for all your hard work.

Cold weather can freeze garden ponds, lowering oxygen for wildlife.

Keep a small area ice-free to prevent winterkill: float a ball before freezing, or gently melt a hole with a hot pan (never smash ice).

Brush off snow for light and leave leaf piles and shelters undisturbed.

It may be too snowy outside to see most reptiles, but check out this massive lizard spotted by one of our Peterborough #GreenTalent Trainees.

He saw this on a recent visit to Fineshade Wood, managed by Forestry England.

What are your favourite reptile-themed public artworks?

Have you seen Froglife’s public artworks around Peterborough?

We love wooden sculptures as they use natural materials &, over time, become a home for algae & lichen supporting the ecosystem.

This one sits in Nene Park and was funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Calling all community groups in Peterborough!

Do you have an outdoor space that could use a pond, or an existing one that needs some TLC?

As part of our #GreenTalent Project, we are looking for spaces for our trainees to build & maintain community ponds.

It’s ball season!

Add a ball to ponds before freezing temps hit.

The gentle movement keeps the hole ice-free, allows air exchange and provides a drink for thirsty wildlife.

Pond already frozen? Use a hot pan to gently melt a hole in the ice, but be careful not to burn yourself!
