why is #aftereffects doing this? The light blue layers are referencing the layer above and below themselves to average it out, in case I want to make more or fewer steps later. And AE Can't handle more than one middle step. How do I troubleshoot? Looks the same when precomped/rendered

Singing lessons are so humbling. Like. here is an aspect of the human experience i dont feel comfortable doing. And now im going to try really hard and reveal how bad I really am and i cant duck out to a lower octave halfway through. In front of an expert.
