True Love The folklore is fading - cedar fence romances aging to a silvered patina, one that shows the times of trouble. The rainstorm and the drizzle; they’re all captured right there, in the very grain that holds us. I give thanks for the shelter while keeping the claustrophobia at bay; but how can you still look at me that way? As if I still shine all day. As if you don’t know all that I’ve seen, my every secret I swore I’d never tell, your eyes dissuading derision while keeping me in your vision, like some guardian of my soul. Though you know what they stole, what they mocked, what left my skin torn and pocked- that flesh you still call beautiful. The flesh you kiss and kneel to in festive liberty as you say sweet words, “You’re perfect to me.” That in silvered romance we still can dance. The folklore is fading, but the truth still proves kind as its fence turns to boundaries that protect this mind.

Existence looms. I lost my life so long ago, so how am I still breathing? Endless thoughts yield room for endless grieving. I imagine me, but then nothing’s there, nothing but a shell that fared so poorly. Met expectations, surely but never quite met self. Who can think of health when life seems only meant for pain? Her spoon makes a sweet ting in her cup, one that becomes a melody she once danced to in those days when lovers were many. I’m cautious when I tend the loom, I know the endings come too soon: when woven it too tight, the tensions not right. So I tiptoe into looser days, play love like it’s a waiting game: but I drop the fiber, notice that neither a rocked or rolled tight love affair has any meaning in the air. The universe just sighs. Nothing can make me wise. ‘Cause these eyes espy diversity, hope maybe time brings love to me: second chances, more romances. So I tend the loom and tapestry, no regimented rest for me: throw my heart down, to the lost and the found. ‘Til weave to where eternity ends, just hoping I could find a friend and still end up alone. Naivety as my own. My own.

Yell Cheese! A flare of ginger, some flame that lingered on the tip of your crown. What fabulous flourish of decoration abounds: that intonation of the fire you held inside, the fire that pierced out of your eyes and into this heart. Calmed from the start but also beating twice as fast. A provocation amassed by even just the thought of you. And by that picture, too- that time you told me to “yell cheese!” and I reversed the play, now I long to return to that day, to let you find me, perhaps the way it was meant to be. But now just the image remains with nothing to blame. Those most beautiful sights always cause so much pain.

To leave the when to which we’re hurled and dream of an inclusive world, one where calmness reigns with generosity. One more like what life’s meant to be. One that relates sense with senses and relegates hate to past tenses. Even when our hearts screams, we can still have a dream- Know it. Show it. Grow it. The one thing they can never take is imagination. The one thing they can never fake is illumination.
